I really dont think this expresses the thoughts of mainstream Republicans - just the nutso far right authoritarian wing . The question to me is: why do they allow those folks to have so much of the limelight.

Because they are now the mainstream of the Republican party. Those who push back against the nuts get RINOed out.

Hillary haters were just as complicit: "Oh come on, electing Trump won't jeopardize Roe. You're just being silly."

It may not, but mainstream republicans have also allowed Trump to take over the party and he absolutely wants to institute Project 2025 or something even worse.

Maybe, but I think it’s more basic than that. Human nature, especially for men, says you will do what you can get away with to achieve your ends. Push boundaries until they push back.
And right now, every time they push farther out on the fringe they not only don’t get pushback, they get cheered on. So they keep going farther. It’s how every authoritarian regime has come to power. It’s not the leaders, it’s the populace who enables it.
What seemed beyond crazy a decade ago is now normalized as a result. And at the rate we are going, this will be too.

That is the trend but I have hope. I just dont see that as sustainable over the long term. Already we have some elected R congressmen wanting to oust the election denying Speaker of the House because other MAGA reasons.

Democracy worked until it gave those other people too much political power…

And instead of trying to win elections through better ideas, it’s ‘take our ball and go home.’

No one talks about project 2025, but it's a serious threat if they implement it.

PSA: if Dear Leader wins, please do not do the whole large marches in every city & speeches the Saturday after the election. The time to do that is before the election and encourage & inform to-be marchers to vote and they can’t do it online the night before.

Virtually. I read his posts. I don’t think most of the Repub party has his views. Maybe that’s just a memory and a hope but I choose to be positive.

They often hide behind the excuse of sarcasm or irony. For those that are actually serious in wanting to tear down our system rather than just get clicks, I'd honestly like to see them identify which country's system they believe we should most emulate. Let's get specific here.
