He mentioned Kentucky. They have an 8.05% African-American population. That is lower than New York, which was mentioned on the other side.
Exactly this. Nobody seems to understand the point. It is the media who are racists, because they intentionally ignore black-on-black homicides, as it doesn't drive clicks and ad dollars. However, if they were truly journalists, they would give those homicides at least the equal amount of coverage on their feeds and TV. But they clearly do not. In this way, they underserve the black community by redlining out these tragedies from the majority of their coverage. This, in turn, leads to aloofness and lack of awareness among the public in general. Makes it easier to forget about and doesn't foster the need for change within those communities. Such change would strengthen the black community and the media knows this. By sweeping it under the rug, they hold African-Americans back from opportunity.
Start spotlighting the issue. Look how many people are taking to the streets over atrocities in Gaza, a far away distant land. Why? Because media doesn't shut up about it, so people take notice and feel moved to do something about it.
Unless it's specifically an apparent hate crime or a LEO shooting an unarmed person race is virtually never specifically mentioned in media reports of homicides and I can assure that the media does cover black on black homicides. For examples read the local section of the Washington Post or watch the DC area local television news and I would guess that's the case in every major metro area. While the race of the perpetrators or victims is very seldom specifically mentioned they do frequently display photos of the victims, perpetrators or both.
“Local section of the paper and liocal TV news” ……. pretty much confirms what the original article states ….. the legacy media has ignored the matter, as have local, state, and federal politicians.
You apparently missed the point. Black on black (or white on white) crimes are regularly reported by the media although the racial/ethic status of the perpetrators and victims hasn't been specifically mentioned for decades. Any reasonable person should be able to infer that if a shooting occurred in a predominately black neighborhood both the perp and the victim were black. Additionally, photos of one or both are also frequently displayed as part of the coverage. I would add there is one story that the media completely missed. When some white liberals as well as black activists were calling for "defunding the police" in a response to shootings by white LEOs of blacks, the strongest opposition to those proposals came from residents of black neighborhoods where they were more concerned about street crime than the relatively rare improper shootings by police officers.
Media discusses crime all the time. In fact, one of the reasons why people always think crime is increasing despite the fact that it has fallen substantially over the last few decades is because of the amount of coverage of crime. Is your objection the lack of coverage about race specifically in crimes that are often about access to drug markets rather than race?
You missed the point, Van Jones is correct in his assessment re the legacy media and you are wrong. Sorry.
Not really. Watch any local news and count the number of stories that they do about any number of crimes. Let's take a look right now: Tampa, FL: Top story about a crime. 3 of the top 4 stories are about crime. WFLA – WFLA News Channel 8 On Your Side in Tampa Bay Florida Orlando, FL: Top story about a crime. 3 of the top 4 stories are about crime. Orlando News, Weather and Sports - Florida News - WESH Channel 2 Miami, FL: Second story about a crime. 2 of the top 4 stories are about crime. NBC 6 South Florida – NBC 6 South Florida | NBC 6 South Florida – Local News, Weather, Traffic, Entertainment, Events, Breaking News How much of the news needs to involve crime for you to claim that they are paying attention to general crime?
And I would add it's not just because crime has been covered by the media that the public believes that's worse than it really is, it's also because politicians of one political party have made it an issue and have consistently publicized it. The same for the conservative media. While anecdotal in Virginia's off off year state legislative election last November Republican candidates in swing districts kept emphasizing crime while Democrats focused on abortion. Apparently the strategy didn't work that well for the Pubs since the Democrats ended up with majorities in both houses of the state legislature, the opposite of what Glenn Youngkin the Republican governor was expecting.
People understand crime. That is not news. Especially when the US is near all time lows in crime. What people dont understand is injustice. That is news.
The local news covers crime all the time. It doesn't ignore it because it's black on black. It's ridiculous to claim otherwise. Interracial murders get more coverage for two reasons, I think: 1. The reaction to them is often much greater than a simple 'two guys got mad at each other and one of them was killed.' 2. Homicides with a racial angle - particularly white on black - draw a great deal more attention because it's often looked upon - rightly or wrongly - as systemic problem with our society at large.
Is broadcast news really legit news anymore or is it just produced entertainment? I'd say the latter for the most part and entertainment is driven by $. I'd don't think it's a whole lot more complicated than that. Now print news may be another matter, but even that is probably driven by clicks, not what is most "important".
They report it but rarely adequately define it. If it is a gang or domestic say it. The vast majority of mass shootings (after definition adjustment) are gang related. Just say it. If they are cray cray just say it. There are so many sacred cows that the reporting becomes skewed because of a unwillingness to graze the 3rd rail. Much like gender reveals There have been black on black crime task forces, community wise, for 40-50 years. As others have said, what are your local poverty demographics. A school shooting, at midnight, in a parking lot, by gangs, is only a school shooting by skewed definition, not by reality. I have seen similar actions regarding crimes committed by homeless and not wanting to paint the population negatively. Compassion and applying actions of a view to a broad group.
Oh God you got me there.....Kentucky is the state with the 19th highest murder rate over the last 15 years. Try again.
So, Van Jones is wrong? You know more about this than he? Van Jones - Wikipedia Lol. C’mon, who pays any attention to the FTU?
The real truth is the left only cares if it helps them gain more control. They don’t care about racial issues unless they can gain more power from it.
