Will there be more honesty re this problem, especially from the progressive camp? Maybe politicians and those impacted will finally begin to honestly and intelligently work for a solution. CNN Reporter Slams Media Over Coverage of Black Kids Killed (msn.com) Maher began, “We do know that, for young black men, gun homicides are the leading cause of death. And…that leading cause outstrips the next 15 causes combined. That’s how bad it is. Also, black men ages 18 to 25 die from gun homicides at a rate nearly 19 times that of white young men the same age. And they’re not being killed by white supremacists, they’re being killed by each other, that is the truth.” Jones replied, “Absolutely.” Jones said there are candlelight vigils, teddy bears and balloons left by crying mothers at the sites of black-on-black homicides every weekend without much attention. “I’m really glad that you raised it, because I think there is this myth that the black community only cares about a black kid getting killed if a white cop does it or a white supremacist does it, and it’s just not true. The media only cares. But there are candlelight vigils every weekend, there are teddy bears, there are balloons, there are crying mothers, there are marches,” Jones continued.
White liberals don’t care about this so nothing will change. If it ain’t racist, it’s not important to the libbies. Sad, but true. Pubs been saying it for years.
I don’t think any of that was really debatable. I think the true issue is the media and how they cover certain aspects of violence. Do you agree that the media pushes white violences and ices over other forms? Do you agree that if you read an article and the suspected perpetrators are not described by skin color it is almost always non white … because if a white oeraon commits the crime.. it’s the lead descriptor almost every time? The media pushes a narrative in our country. It’s why so many on both sides of the aisle have such twisted views of what is really happening.
Do you have some examples of what Pubs are doing about it? “We found that murder rates are, on average, 40% higher in the 25 states Donald Trump won in the last presidential election compared to those that voted for Joe Biden. In addition, murder rates in many of these red states dwarf those in blue states like New York, California, and Massachusetts. And finally, many of the states with the worst murder rates—like Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, South Carolina, and Arkansas—are ones that few would describe as urban. Only 2 of America’s top 100 cities in population are located in these high murder rate states. And not a single one of the top 10 murder states registers in the top 15 for population density.” Third Way
So you're suggesting a police shooting gets more media attention than a neighborhood shooting? Guess what? The same is true for a cop being arrested for DUI, domestic violence or shoplifting from Walmart. They are under more scrutiny because they are hired, trained and paid to protect the public. If you get a DUI, it's not even a blip on the local media's RADAR. Your local cop gets one and it's newsworthy.
I agree that media cover stories, including those about violent crimes, differently depending on those involved and affected. How that plays out in specific examples depends on which side’s media we’re talking about.
Stipulate on media bias. What is the solution? Extreme: ban blacks from having guns? Forced integration? hope: push education, religion, improve policing?
I'm not really sure what's so notable considering that's been common knowledge for decades that the perpetrators and victims of homicides are almost always of the same race.
I don’t blame the media for not giving much coverage when one gangbanger kills another gang banger. The overall issue is systemic, but outside of reporting murder stats there is no “story” to get people’s attention on those individual shootings (esp where it’s almost a daily occurrence). There is no victim for the public to be sympathetic towards. However, I’d say when a gang shootout kills a bystander or child - that type of story should get basically the same play as a bad police shooting. Yet, it pretty clearly doesn’t. That criticism of the media is fair.
Yes, interracial crime gets more attention. But Are we pretending no one admits black in black crime is a huge problem?
Van Jones doesnt offer a solution in that segment. But if he did it would not be supported by right wingers. Here is a link to the Van Jones established organization against institutional abuses of the justice system. Van Jones | RFK Human Rights
The legacy media will quickly draw attention to what it considers to be “hate crimes” ….. without acknowledging the more frequent minority murders resulting from intra-racial/ethnic murders. Case in point, the recent discussion of the death of trans fluid teenager that was bullied and assaulted by another student or students. The media and many active on this board find that more interesting and worthy of discussion than the murder of young people by gang members. If the victim is deemed to be LBGTQetc, the media will cover the incident to a much greater degree than the “gang shooting” murder of young men in Chicago, etc.
Those population centers have voted in the same policies for generations at a 90% rate. To truly fix those issues would be very expensive and ugly and not generate a single extra vote. That why it doesn’t change. Good luck getting a politician to sign on to a policy thats costly and no additional votes than without the new policy. A successful venture in business is based on a P&L. Successful Venture in politics is adding votes.
I watched this when it was released. Jones sounded like the smartest person on earth especially compared to ann coulter lol
You left out one statistic that might explain what you are trying to say. The RED states you mentioned also have some of the highest black populations in the country. Just maybe the higher murder rates are more related to this statistic than the fact that they are red states.
