Luke walked twice and scored two runs, so it’s not like he was completely unproductive.

Yes and Donay got a walk in his two days in the DH. I'm just saying in three games we still haven't got a hit out of the DH spot. We might not get one Friday as well. But I'd almost be willing to bet money if Cags is the DH on Saturday the DH spot will come thru. HA

Well I hope we get solid outings from the pitching staff this weekend. I'm watching to see if Fisher, Slater, and Neely can handle Friday so the rest of the weekend is manageable and give Sully some options. We still haven't seen Frank Menendez(L), Grayson Smith, Reilly Witmer, or Jacob Gomberg(L) yet but they maybe held for relief until Tuesday or Wednesday. Jameson, Clemente, and Satin look to be options for the weekends. McNeillie is a big question why he hasn't pitched yet. I'm unaware of any problem. Purnell is a tough one to figure out. Seems great for the first 2-3 batters but can give up a few hits rather quick.

I cringe every time Purnell comes into the game. Just too many bad outings for me to have confidence in him anymore.

His pitches have got to be down or he’s in for a rough outing IMHO.

He and Shelton saw the shift and accepted free bases, including the bunt by 10 and a double by 11.

I'm a little concerned that McNeillie and Menendez have yet to see action. Based on my scrimmages' observations I had McNeillie circled as a mid week starter and Menendez as first out of the pen LHP... I hope there are no issues with these two freshmen. They had the look of "contributors" and had better outings than some of the guys that have seen action.

    ^^^^did you let Sully know?????

Seriously both looked good and you would expect them to contribute but (1) this was a weird week and a weekend starter took away a midweek start from someone (2) the Tues game was short taking innings from someone (3) he had to get his weekend guys some work and get Neely out there and (4) you never know when guys are dealing with arm issues. May take a few weeks to figure out where guys stand.

Donay returns to the lineup batting 8th. Let's hope he'll actually contribute offensively tonight. Otherwise I figure Sully will just bench him for someone else.

Donay looked better tonight. Obviously the home run and the single, but he also got robbed of a third hit thanks to a tremendous play at SS. I’m also convinced that called strike 3 was ball 4 but maybe it was just my vantage point. Nobody seemed to like that call though. He seemed a lot less trigger happy tonight. I think he earned a spot in the lineup tomorrow but I do want to see Garrison again this weekend.

Some pros and cons where we stand after game 1 with Columbia.....

    1. Pitching pros - Gator pitchers had no walks and no hit batters tonight. So far this season these freshmen have pitched at least 1 inning and still have a 0.0 ERA (Philpott, Peterson, Clemente, Whitmer, and Satin). Yes its early but maybe we are seeing Sully building some freshmen options for middle relief instead of some of the returning arms. Witmer saw his first action as a Gator in the 9th and could be a closer candidate to watch.
    2. Pitching cons - Sully must be aggravated with Purnell and Jameson (alright maybe concerned is a better word) after the control they showed in the spring practices. Here they are getting another chance after their troubles last last and we seem to be right back where we were. They have only got a few weeks to get in rhythm or else they will get moved down the picking order and soon.
    3. Defensive pros - The Gators again had no errors on the night and have only 1 error on the season. Their cumulative fielding average is .992 after 4 games.
    4. Batting pros - The DH got a hit and then some. Donay finally got that big homerun that he is known for. Let's see how he does on Saturday. Armando Albert came in and was 2 out of 3 looking sharp at 2nd base. If he keeps producing he should get more looks in mid weeks and might even be a replacement at 3rd base if Thomas drops off. Gator bats got 10 walks tonight showing good plate patience.
    5. Batting cons - Not much after getting 15 hits, their season high this season. Cags is due for a big day either Saturday or Sunday. Thomas missed a great opportunity to improve his stats tonight like the rest. Its unfortunate he got hit and hope everything is okay so he gets right back out there soon. He is not expected to have that high an average but 3rd base will be a position to watch if Armando Albert keeps coming thru when called. Hopefully Kurland's hand is okay, if not Albert will be back at second. I'm glad we got some DH hits tonight. Might Sully try some other bats there soon instead of Donay or Garrison during a midweek to see who's ready like Brookins, Yost, or Albert? If Kurland is out tomorrow, does Sully put Robertson back in the leadoff for the weekend?

Watched Sully's comments in the PC and he gave two big nuggets. First, Kurland should be okay, x-rays were negative. Just have to see how sore he is tomorrow if he can play. Second, he said he needs to get McNeillie out there to pitch so we probably will see him tomorrow. Both good to hear.

McNeille has been dealing with a blister. That’s why we haven’t seen him yet.
Fisher Jamison has been tossed out there a lot. His stuff looks good but man he gets hit hard. It must be flat and batters must have an easy time picking it up from that over the top motion.

Still early but we have to figure out middle relief. P and J are pitching like last season. Yikes

He had also pushed his hands back to the more normal set position last night rather than out in front of his face like they were in Jax the other night—he looked more relaxed.

For me, the biggest con was the offense leaving 15 on base. It's still early, but, I seemingly remember this was an issue all throughout last season as well (the inability to hit with RISP). Not going to be able to get away with that once we start playing better teams.

Also, we're not going to get very far if the only relievers Sully trusts as his "go to's" is Purnell and Jameson. They both were awful last season and they're certainly trending down again in the early going. On the positive side, Slater was flat out dominant last night and I was impressed with Witmer's debut.

Albert makes his first Gator's start at 2B. Kurland being held out as a precaution after getting hit in the hand by a pitch last night (x-rays came back negative).
