A new NP is now established in CO. It's the site of a WWII internment camp Former Japanese internment camp Amache is the newest national park “As a nation, we must face the wrongs of our past in order to build a more just and equitable future. The Interior Department has the tremendous honor of stewarding America’s public lands and natural and cultural resources to tell a complete and honest story of our nation’s history,” Secretary Haaland said in a statement. How can we be great again when we keep pointing out our past mistakes?
I guess the real question is were we great when this occurred and are we trying to go back there or avoid going back there?
Or are we great by being honest about when we weren’t great? Even though we are trying to be great again?
As a huge fan of the National Park System (326 sites and counting visited so far) I'm happy to see these stories being told. While Manzanar is the most developed of all the internment camp park sites, they are all pretty interesting and important to learn about that chapter in our history. There's not much to Tule Lake (just a ranger station really) and Minidoka is a little more developed.
