I think you’re failing to account for the sec grind as a factor. When you only have to prepare for two or three games a year, and you can keep your team healthy all season, it’s much easier to prepare for a team who’s getting the shit beat out them week in and week out.
Look at what happened the one time we got a few weeks to prepare for them, get healthy, and game plan just for them for a few weeks. Bowden pretty much got to do that for us every year during the regular season, and we still found a way to beat him a few times.

FSU was a great team, but during that time, didn’t they only get two championships? They got one later with the rapist also but that wasn’t really during that run. Spurrier had a great run also and ended up with only one championship. FSU, Florida, and Miami kept each other from having more championships than they got. There were a lot of good teams in the 90s. we will never know, but I would guess if FSU was in the SEC , Spurrier would’ve won less SEC championships and FSU might not have gotten their two titles either.

Winner. Starters have fewer opportunities for injuries when you are slobberknocking your ACC opponent 34-3 at halftime and you roll out your second and third string players in the second half. There were some games that UF was able to do that, but not nearly as many because of the competition. The ACC has also been a better league recently than they were back when FSU joined.....even Clemson was down. It really was FSU and the 9 dwarves.

Particularly when you go for your first 3 years without a conference loss. That says more about your competition than how good you are. There will always be a conference game where if you don't bring the A game you can get beat, not them I guess.

They didn't even need their C game to run through the ACC like crap through a goose.

One of Bowden quotes was that a great coach can only really get his team up to play highly motivated a few times a year. Being we lost to inferior teams in all three seasons which we won natties, I’d say he was spot on.

Since we are so far off topic...
One of Bowden's quotes was that he coached "next year's team this year."
It's a great quote-and one big reason for his dynasty.

But think- could he really have done that if he had to play more than 1-2 hard games per year.
    Of course not.

Good point, also having that pipeline in place helped. When your three deep jumps every year, it’ll be more difficult.

Interesting to see so many people addressing a poster who clearly loves ref$u. The crap he posts defending that cesspool is borderline absurd. What a joke

I don’t get your passionate defense of ref$u. If you were at UF in the 80s, you convey a surprising lack of knowledge of our team in the 90s….. Yes they seemed to have our number in games at the Joke, but….

In the 90s, the semis were always our last game of the regular season. Know what we were doing the weekend before? Playing a must-win SEC game with the conference championship on the line. Know what the clowns were doing that weekend before? Going through the motions against one of many cupcake ACC losers after preparing the previous 3 weeks for their one tough regular season opponent - Florida.

Consider that one of UF’s losses to the semis was 24-21 in the echo of the whistle game. You think ref$u was the better team that year? 52-20 says hell no. Q.E.D.

Agree, and we lost players who were loyal to Savage!
