It’s because Coach Golden is executing the “get a 30 point lead and coast to a victory” strategy we all agreed on.
I would be shocked to see a 1-3-1 zone against the Gators. We have too many three point threats from the corners and legit down low threats. A 2-3 zone would be a better zone against us. It takes away Pullin's dribble penetration and allows close outs on our three point threats. The best way to attack such a zone is to get the ball to a big around the foul line area that can shoot, pass or dribble (triple threat) from that location to good effect. Not sure we have that person. Matt Bonner could do that. Samuel might be our best bet at that. One big problem is that somebody other than Pullin is making the decisions.
Good explanation. I think you're right about the 2-3 against the Gators. Give it a year or so and I bet Haugh would be great in that zone buster role. It's apparent that we've put Samuel near the FT stripe against the zone, but it's asking alot for him to drive or dish and as you say make the decisions.
LSU threw the 1-3-1 on us. White likes the 1-3-1. I suspect we see it …. Again. i agree… it shouldn’t work. But it does. I agree… we should shred it. But we haven’t.
What I have not seen but it does make sense against us might be a triangle and two. Man up our two scoring guards and zone the rest. Not as something they would do for extended time but every once in a while as a wrinkle.
Condon has more length to pass/shoot above the pressure. Haugh just might develop into that player who can dribble drive/dish/shoot, like a Swiss army knife. I sure hope those guys stick around a while. They're both tough as nails for first year players and have major potential.
But at that time of the game we were not going to be taking three point shots and that helped LSU defensively. Missed three point shots can be offensive rebounds but they can also be easy run outs for points that don't take much time off the clock. At the same time LSU had to take some difficult ones that happened to go in. They got lucky but didn't have enough luck in the end. I don't think that the LSU zone would have been a big problem earlier in the game.
you may be right… but we don’t know. The only data points we have are teams zoning is in the second half ….and getting back into the game. Would we attack a zone differently earlier in a game? I guess it’s possible.
At halftime Lee Humphrey said: "I want to see the Gators come out fast like they did vs Auburn to put LSU away, but I expect LSU to play varios zones to try and slow us down." It's becoming a real thing that needs to be addressed.
Yes… I like to listen to the radio broadcast a lot. During the loss of Texas A&M, Lee did a report from the sidelined after listening in on one of our time outs. He relayed that Gordon was talking about how the zone was giving problems, but not to panic and keep running our man sets. You could tell from his voice and tone, Lee was somewhat baffled that we were not going to attack the zone differently than we would a man defense. But look… From a result standpoint, we are on a heckuva streak. And if we can learn while winning… That’s an awesome equation.
At every level of basketball, zones cause fits. They get you out of your offense, slow the pace, and force you to run very limited, specific stuff. It also makes you the defensive team terrible on the glass, usually gives up open jumpers if the offense is patient, and scrambles you getting into and out of transition. Those are massive downsides and why so few coaches consistently want to play zone.
