They were good. Beat the crap out of a highly rated Purdue to get to the sweet 16 Look at the roster 1986-87 Florida Gators Men 's Roster and Stats | College Basketball at Sports-Reference.com
Love this team. 2 wins in the tourney……first team in forever to make sweet sixteen. The next year we brought in Livingston Chatman and Dwayne Davis……just two great players that were so fun to watch. Great times!
That team was good enough to win it all or make the final 4...they had Syracuse beat in the tourney but officials took over the last 5 minutes to call some ticky tacky fouls on UF to get Cuse the win. Horrible foul call on Schintzus and I believe he fouled out with like 5 minutes to go with UF up by 5 points. Cuse shot double the free throws to UF 20-10. That was a great team.
My unsung hero from that team was Melvin Jones. Came off the bench was a man. This team had two separate 5 man rosters they could rotate. I realize the young guys on here are going : "you must be old" haha
My senior year at UF. One of the best memories of my life was associated with that team. They recognized us- the UF cross-country team- right before the Bama game because we won the SEC title the previous October. It was surreal to be on the floor looking up at the O'Dome after watching so many games from the stands. But then- even better- they gave us courtside seats for the game!! The only time in my life I would sit courtside. For any game. Bama was really good that year. They would go on to win the SEC and only lose 2 SEC games. (16-2!) So it was a huge game. But the Gator boyz were hot that night- and we won easily. Thanks for letting me go back in time...
The Lawrence Brothers played at Crestview H.S., where I did as well. Joe could shoot (our nickname for him was 1 - 800.) Pat was younger but had a great tourney game against Syracuse. Fun team!
That was a fun team to watch. Sophomore year at UF for me. Made it to every home game except one where a test was scheduled at 8PM. We had just got cable in the rooms at Murphree and I remember watching the 1st ever UF NCAA tourney games - NC State, Purdue and Syracuse on a tiny little set. Good times.
Joe Lawrence was the foreshadowing of Lee Humphrey. He could hit some 3s at crucial times and break open games. I remember us playing Purdue in the NCAAs- I think a Sunday afternoon. Lawrence kept hitting 3s and we won easily. It was surreal to actually see us in the tourney. So much joy.
Wasn't the 3 pointer introduced in his senior year? I may not be remembering correctly, but it seems he didn't have the opportunity his whole career. It's a shame.
