I’ve stayed out of this thread until I popped in because I thought the Ice Spice picture was funny, mostly because I don’t really care, but now that I’m here I’ll throw out that I don’t know that Bundchen is a great parallel. There was backlash to the Taylor thing even prior to the dumb conspiracy theories too, so putting the stupid conspiracy theory to the side, I think what makes it a not perfect parallel is the Swifties (who I think are the source of a fair bit of folks’ annoyance over this whole thing). There’s not a mob of very devoted Giselle Bundchen fans out to obsess over everytime she’s on TV and make it the leading trending topic in entertainment. Ditto for when Jessica Simpson was dating Romo - there were the jokes of whether she was a bad luck charm because the Cowboys tended to lose when she was in attendance, but it was a different media environment at the time and something like that couldn’t dominate coverage. Taylor is different. I think you saw a good number of football fans feel like Swifties were trying to make Chiefs games primarily about Taylor, and you saw a backlash to that.
Red State beats Blue State. Travis Kelce puts hand over heart. Mega-celebrity Taylor Swift dates a football player and chugs beer. Jesus commercial. Patrick Mahomes, KC kicker and usher give God the glory. Life is good.
I don’t think you CAN throw out the stupid conspiracy theories because it is the proliferation of the stupid conspiracy theories that makes the snowflakes’ complaints so absurd!! And, Bundchen wasn’t just a beautiful woman; she was the highest paid, most prolific, worldwide model at the time. Her worldwide following was immense. But nobody bitched that she was at the games. As to your last point, where Swifties swarmed to football fandom (buying millions of dollars of merchandise, tuning in to games on record numbers, and giving the NFL a market that previously didn’t exist), I suppose I get your annoyance. But come on? We get “annoyed” at lots of irregularities. O think the level of complaints to the “new fan base” is entirely disproportionate to the level of “annoyance.” And the reason for the loudness of the complaining is because Swift is not a fan of Trump, even though she hasn’t uttered a word of politics in connection with her new boyfriend. That’s the ONLY reason why there is a loud and disproportionate complaining, for reasons with no discernible difference than Giselle.
The same guy who was speaking in Sioux City, Iowa and thought that he was in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
You can look at just about any issue, real or imagined and the reason MAGA thinks they way they do is because of Trump, whether or not the person is perceived to be a loyal supporter of Trump or not.
I’m just disappointed the game was on CBS. If Fox (who will use Estimated Prophet as a bumper song any time they show a game with a California team) had carried it, we might have gotten at least one glimpse of the most significant musician in attendance:
Now that this thread is no longer about Hamas, (Shame on you Princess) I'll drop my two cents. Note that this post comes from a highly opinionated indy rock snob. It's all positive, Taylor's music, her lyrics, her persona, her relationship, the boost to NFL viewership. I don't love her music but I have immense respect for what she's achieved, (props to Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff). She was an annoyance to me in the beginning, seemingly shallow and immature. But she has matured into one of the greatest pop singer/songwriters of our time. She has her thumb on the pulse of women from their teens to their forties and her songs resonate deeply providing comfort and reassurance in difficult world. I will say that the recent ascent in popularity has worn on me but that's my problem. That doesn't get in the way of my profound admiration.
