Growing up on the Southside of Chicago we could play park league before we were old enough for Little League. It was great. The only adults were the two coaches.

Then when we were old enough for Little League you could go that route or stay in the park league. My first year I stayed in park league but after that year a friend of mine convinced me to play Little League. What a difference. I pitched and did fine on a crappy team but some of the opposing coaches were like the one in the Bad News Bears movie and parents were awful. It sucked. And the guys a year behind me lost to Japan in the finals so it was very competitive.

Went back to park league the next year but I didn't pitch. The other fathers didn't think it would be fair.

As every coach says every spring:
If we get quality starts, play sound defense and get timely hitting we will be OK

"Pitching, defense and three run homer"

    - Earl Weaver

Having a starting rotation of Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson with every guy being a twenty game winner is a good start to pitching.

My father was on that staff prior to Dobson. He had a few good years and even thru a no hitter.
