It would be really great of the GOP could have someone other than Jim Jordan as a public spokesman. Anything that comes from him is tainted. Use someone else to spread the message.

 

How dare the US Government try to keep its citizens alive by trying to prevent the spread of lies about the vaccine. It's unfortunately clear from reading this board that they failed in that endeavor though .

Assuming the story is completely accurate and is not misrepresented by either the Post or Jordan's selective release of emails ... can you explain why you think the administration asking Amazon to either remove books or redirect searches is an indication of an authoritative dictator?

I don’t see the issue with govt picking and choosing what we see and hear and read. Clearly the govt has OUR best interest at heart. And they wouldn’t lie or make up crap just to keep control. Abaolutely I want govt deciding what I believe, control what is on social media, co tell what books are available to adults.

We could all stop the fingering pointing and realize both sides want only 1 thing… control. That’s it. Nothing more.

This country is awash in people using disinformation to achieve their ends. How exactly do we deal with it? Some portion of our population between 20-40% can't figure out at all what's fake. And now we have deepfake AI videos to deal with.

Should we let all this stuff fly because first amendment?

Exactly. Why should Amazon or the administration promote (and that is the issue the NYP article is complaining of) books that provides misinformation? There's enough misinformation on Fox "News", "News"Max, Breibart "News", "Info"Wars, OA"N" and dozens more to satisfy all of the righties' thirst for "knowledge". They don't have to pop up first on my Amazon search results page.

There’s probably a gray area around the federal “asking” a corporation to silence some viewpoints, but as a general rule, I think that yes, we should let this stuff fly because of the first amendment. The problem is that we often disagree about what’s real and what is an emergency.

To many on the right, the leaky border represents a real national emergency that rises to the level of declaration of a state of emergency and impeachment of the secretary of homeland security. Would you be ok with Trump’s administration asking Amazon to censor books that it views as immigration propaganda? I certainly wouldn’t.

You might say, of course not because the border is a fake crisis, but that’s how a lot of the other side feels about COVID. The key question isn’t what is real? It is instead who decides? If we say that the president can decide, then we have to be okay with the next president making his own decisions on what ideas get censored, and I for one am not.

 

If true, I agree that this is a problem. It’s the same problem we face by letting DeSantis punish Disney for woke speech, except that DeSantis and co. levied actual state punishments on Disney.
