The truth hurts don't it. More Americans have two jobs or more, a sign of inflation's burden (usatoday.com) The number of Americans working two or more jobs has reached its highest level since the pandemic’s start, new federal data show, a trend that suggests more of us are feeling inflation’s pinch. Nearly 8.4 million people held multiple jobs in October, the Labor Department reported Friday. They represent 5.2% of the workforce, the largest share of moonlighters since January 2020. Employment statistics show that 5.9% of women worked multiple jobs in October, compared with 4.7% of men. Roughly 5 million Americans held one full-time and one part-time job. Nearly 2 million held two part-time gigs. Another 1.1 million said they held jobs where the hours varied. Fewer than 400,000 held two full-time jobs. Okay, so the current number is 5.1% of people have multiple jobs. I don't remember you being upset about that during Trump's pre-pandemic times, in which the figures usually vari d between 5.0-5.2%, peaking at 5.3% in the summer of 2019. Why do you think you weren't upset about it then? Multiple Jobholders as a Percent of Employed
It’s just always something. Claims that the higher Q6 figures should be used popped up with Obama and then quickly disappeared under Trump. Trump claimed the real unemployment was as high as 40 percent in 2015. But the BLS figures suddenly got real in 2017. Weird huh? https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...-numbers-fake-before-they-made-him-look-good/
A part of the increase in 2nd jobs are more people working from home since the pandemic. WFH more than tripled during the pandemic. And while more people are returning to hybrid work or office work now, about half of American workers have reported WFH in the past week, up from 42% pre-pandemic. What does this have to do about people having a second job? Ditching commute time and not having someone look over your shoulder at your computer allows many people to take a second job. 70% of remote workers report having a second job. I would expect the 2nd job number to continue to increase, even as inflation has cooled off. Not necessarily because people need a 2nd job. Because they have the freedom and flexibility to have a 2nd job. I WFH, and I don't need a 2nd job, but have thought about it. Something like part time, online tutoring. Something that would be fulfilling, and bring in money I'd likely save for big purchases and/or retirement. Right now, I'm dealing with an aging parent; not a good time to add anything else to my plate. But by year's end, I might be one of those added to the 2nd job list. And not because I need to. But because I want to.
I have a second job, actually two different consulting services, not because I need it, but because it keeps me engaged in an alternative endeavors and business networks. I can do it at home, at night, while I watch tv or even watch football on the weekends, and it helps provide disposable income to help enhance our travels. With remote work, I have been on the clock while traveling pretty much everywhere there is internet or cell service.
I dont mean to insult your intelligence but that article does. It assumes that you are not smart enough to know that covid forced that number to unusual lows and that current levels are at par with the lowest levels precovid. Curious, does it bother you they think you are not smart?
Why would anyone send money back to the government that they started confiscating from me and my employer since I was 15 and I was told they were going to hold MY money and give it back to me when I retired? So those who were successful and sacrificed during their life planning for their retirement and don't necessarily rely on their SS check are now expected to not receive that check because we need to spend more of our money helping out someone else? Clean up the waste and the deficit will go away!
If you dont pay your house mortgage but instead put the money you owe the mortgage company into a savings account you didnt save jack. You still owe the mortgage and are net zero. Any boomer collecting social security put money into their savings account but walked away from their defense budget mortgage so us kids can pay. No one saved anything. Anything they are collecting is at the generosity of those paying current taxes.
Uh..... NO I pay my income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, etc on top of my FICA taxes that my employer matched for my SS savings account. And you are right if I don't pay my mortgage i still owe it, but if I do pay it, FICA taxes, it becomes mine and I don't have a mortgage.
You havent paid what you owe me for building up a military that kept you safe and you left me with the bill. The fact that you didnt pay that bill but somehow think you saved your own social security is cute.
Well Bless your Heart. I pay every tax I am charged, the fact that the government decides to spend it inefficiently is not my fault, that would be your fault for electing the idiots that want to give out all the handouts all over the world! And don't come to me now about the Iraq war and George Bush, nearly everyone in this country was for that war, hence the approval rating he had.
'Nearly everyone'? Not even close. Dems in congress voted against it by a count of 147-110. Many of us had the good sense to oppose a wasteful war waged under false pretenses. Those of you who didn't cost the US trillions of dollars and thousands of lives.
Once again, the percentage of people with multiple jobs has returned to the level that we generally saw it during Trump. Why is it only now that you are concerned about this figure, but you weren't saying how rough the economy was in 2019, when that number was actually a bit higher?
I wouldnt know how that feels. I like to do a quick check on the data before I post something. You should try it. Will save some facepalms like this one.
