I’ve always liked Prince. But that doesn’t change the fact that he’s a wimp. He was scared to face the competition.
No cell phones. Some of the biggest, busiest stars on the planet. And somehow got them to sing together and get along…into the wee hours of the morning. I miss Kenny Rogers.
IMO Huey and Lauper killed....maybe MJ didn't like them ripping lose right after his softer vocal. But by and large everyone was letting it rip for their 3 seconds
And it was suggested that Madonna was going to do it and Lauper got her part or something. Maybe madonna and lauper had a feud going.
Something I found quite humorous was that this was supposed to be a who's who of the best ever singers and songwriters but some of them were one hit wonders. Kim Carnes?
I'll have to catch that. I could never stand Lionel Ritchie in interviews. He always comes off like he invented music himself. Too arrogant.
Terrific Documentary that's a lot of fun and VERY cool for anyone interested in process and how things come into being because watching Lionel Ritchie manifest this was truly inspiring. Bluke, gotta give you a little bit of shite here for watching this thing and coming here to call Prince a wimp yet say NOTHING about Waylen Jennings showing himself to be a small, SMALL man who turned and ran at the first sign of something that didn't fit whatever small-minded view of himself he had (won't spoil it for those who haven't watched). Otherwise I fully agree with your review =)
Good catch. Waylon Jennings was a pussy too. I actually listen and buy Prince music. I don’t really know Waylon’s music so I didn’t really care that he ran off. Would have been cool to see Prince in that room with those stars.
I’ve always loved Willie’s solo in that song. It was really cool to confirm that the honesty and clarity you hear in his solo was just a product of who he is.
And I’m sure someone has mentioned it but the kindness Quincy, Stevie and Lionel Ritchie showed Dylan was quite moving.
They said Diana Ross was crying when they finished and didn’t want the night to end. And then she asked Darryl Hall for his autograph?! What! So freaking cool. I think Quincy finished off with a call to Lionel and said something like…”those white boys really brought it.” Love it.
My favorite quote was when Quincy said "Adrenaline just took the bus out of town" at 8 am after pulling an all nighter. As a graduate of UFs Architecture program, I know exactly what he was talking about! Get that model done before class starts at 7:50 am, adrenaline leaves town, and you might as well be dead. No amount of Mountain Dew can save you.
I remember this so well being in my mid forties today. I'm gonna watch tonight. Somehow I forgot that Dionne Warwick was Whitney Houston's first cousin. I loved Warwick's voice - so unique that I always felt I recognized it immediately. She's now 83 and presumably past the Psychic Friends Network days. Man, do I feel old.
Wait til you see Dionne when she finds out she’ll be singing her part with Willie Nelson…it gave me a chuckle. BTW, I love Dionne Warwick. She’s better than Whitney for me.
This is great. I don’t know what piece of junk car Kenny rolled up in. Then Cyndi Lauper says she felt under-dressed lol.
I recall Lauper almost didn’t go to the studio. She said her boyfriend told her not to get involved because the song wasn’t any good. Lionel told Cindy to make the right decision and be there.
We watched a few days ago. Great watch and memories of the time. Had forgotten that Ritchie co wrote the song with MJ, much more respect. Of course Quincy Jones is/was a genius. Was not a fan of Lauper's part but loved all the rest, especially Springsteen and Stevie. Dylan was Dylan.
