If you like music, mostly back when there were badass musicians, get your ass over to Netflix. A few takeaways… -I’ve always enjoyed behind the scenes stuff on musicians and this has ample of it. -Lionel Richie is a true badass. (I’ll be seeing him and Earth, Wind, Fire live soon). -it gives you the impression that Quincy Jones was playing “fantasy football” with his selection of music stars from many genres. Made me consider others who weren’t there and why they didn’t make the cut. -Prince is a gigantic wimp. -Sheila E is an idiot. She got butthurt. (I saw her at Epcot last year, cool drummer) -it’s entertaining to see the big dogs in the same room together. The Greatest Night in Pop Is a Huge Blast of Gen-X Nostalgia
Thanks, I will have to check this out. Last night, I watched the documentary about the album Thriller - still the best-selling album of all time. Thriller 40 (2023) ⭐ 7.9 | Documentary, Music
That's how we lure you in. Next thing you know, you'll be asking for college loan forgiveness and marching for common sense gun legislation.
The wife and I watched it last night. We're both 80s kids. Really enjoyed it. The stars aligned (pun intended) to get all those stars in the same town at the same time, plus a few who came in special for the one-night event. Great special. Highly recommended for anyone who grew up in the 80s.
Bruce Springsteen sang like he was trying to push a brick out of his ass on this one. The back and forth between him and Stevie Wonder was the highlight of the song, IMO.
My wife was watching it. As far as Prince I was never a big fan but I don’t think I realized what a musical talent he was until after he died. I had no idea he was one of the greatest guitarist who ever lived. I enjoy this performance. You have to wait till the end until prince tears it up.
And Huey Lewis got his spot because of it. Funniest part was when Stevie Wonder was talking about writing a verse in Swahili, Walon Jennings walked out, "this good ole boy ain't gonna sing in Swahili". Then someone had to tell Stevie, Uhh.. they don't speak Swahili in Ethiopia.
Is this the recording event when Stevie Wonder told the ensembled musicians either he or Ray Charles would drive them home if they did not lose their egos and cooperate during the recording session?
I remember a clip that has been around for years where it looked liked Michael Jackson may have not liked what he was hearing from Huey Lewis. Maybe I misread that entirely though. Lewis definitely didn't make it look or sound effortless but also a very unique sound.
And apparently Al Jarreau liked to drink during the whole thing. Some of Lionel Ritchies stories of his time at Michael's house when they started writing were funny.
