NCAA pounds Bohannon, slaps bama, too

D1Bsb reported details of NCAA penalties for Brad Bohannon, who likely never will coach another college team, and a mild slap for bama, which was responsible for the coach's behavior.

Tide baseball got three years of probation and a fine of $5000, the minimum for a level 1 violation. Bohannon got a 15 year show cause penalty, plus, if he is hired somewhere during that period, he would be suspended for his first five seasons. His new team would pay him for five years for NOT coaching. Makes it unlikely even Miss or Aub would hire him- but of course, both did hire Hugh Freeze.

One anecdote got a wow from me. Shortly before a game against LSU, Bohannon learned Luke Holman would not pitch and texted his betting sidekick, "HAMMER … is out for sure … Lemme know when I can tell LSU … Hurry." The guy then tried to make a $100k bet on LSU at the BetMGM sportsbook, which would only allow him to bet $15k. The guy apparently tried to make more bets and told sportsbook staff, "If you guys only knew what I know..."

Bohannon didn't generate sympathy by denying everything to bama and NCAA and refusing to cooperate. Very Charley Pell-ish. Bama will be fine with the probation and won't miss the fine and may do well with their new coach and portal-based lineup. But Holman is at LSU and Colby Shelton is a Gator1.

funny part is the line hardly moved.. think it went from lsu -150 to -170.. and didnt bama end up winning?? lol

Id take him right now as recruiter and dont care what he bets on. He didnt hold out Holman for betting purposes.. he was just trying to profit on what was happening regardless. Should of stayed at AU,, wouldnt need extra money..;)

AU also hired Pearl.. hows that working out.. So well UF hired his pupil..lol

    No team bbqs i hope???

LSU won 7-5–but it wasn’t the sure thing he expected.

That penalty is essentially a lifetime ban. I’ve never heard of the suspension on top of the show cause (which is probably sufficient in itself). And it isn’t like he was paying players (which may not be that egregious for, say, a minor league opportunity)—no one will want to hire someone who was feeding intel on his own team and profiting from gambling.

He was rarely ever at AU games when he was recruting coordinator.. Was always out looking for talent that could also afford tuition etc. Tough finds. And why Bama, under same rules as AU, hired him... Now they can just write NIL checks..so his value is diminshed either way.

    Memory is incorrect:

1- Charley Pell did not bet on football games.
2- Charley Pell admitted to many of the charges that he knew of, and fell on the sword.

Charley Pell was doing exactly what Bama, FSU, Miami etc were doing. In fact, Lomas Brown stated that Miami offered more money, but he signed w/ UF for $1,500.

Pell was hired to cheat like bama, noles and scUM and did exactly that. Even if there are examples of other programs doing as bad or worse, I'm no fan of what-aboutisms. Top UF boosters were happy to finance the cheating. Pell utltimately may have come clean in some ways, but initially he and coconspirators denied everything and I was anxious to believe them. We got the penalties we deserved and I never want to have that sort of person in a Gator program. I'm withholding judgment on the current NIL investigation because the NCAA has totally botched pretty much everything related to NIL. I donate to Fla Victorious for bsb, but I still want them to live within whatever the rules turn out to be. Plenty of Gators still think highly of him, in spite of Pell leading what was- at the time- the lowest depths of the program in 1979, then leading the program to even lower depths. Had Steve Spurrier not come home, Gators may never have recovered from the penalties and may have followed the course of the other outlaw program of that period, SMU. Pell didn't fall on his sword, he didn't publicly name names of the dirtiest boosters, but he minimized his behavior for the rest of his life. I'm still embarrassed.

Charlie Pell was the head coach when I took at teaching job at UF. I had just come from Illinois where they had a cheating football coach (Mike White. Not THAT Mike White) that was an eventually an embarrassment.

Miami football was cheaing in 1979??? lol is that how they went 5-6?? they did beat UF though, so I guess that qualifies.

Im sure hiring one of best college HCs ever had nothing to do w/ success a couple years later.

Cheating doesn't mean you are going to win. Maybe they sucked at it.

I don't know anything about UM football but just making an observation.

Just think how much this happens and you never hear about it because the parties involved don’t get greedy, don’t say incriminating stuff at a sportsbook, cover their tracks better, etc etc.

You think referees/umpires don’t do this exact thing?

So it was just superb coaching in Miami that led to their rise? Thanks for the laugh. :rolleyes:History says otherwise.

I lived in Miami during the canes rise and regularly played golf with a "golden cane" (assume u know what the means since ur so knowledgeable on Miami sports). He often rode the team plane to away games and laughed his a$$ off at the irony of Pell and Company getting slammed while UFs rivals (including Miami) skated.

again im well aware all 'others' cheat,,didnt live in Miami, but did Gville for 30 years.. so got it.

NOw mid 80s and later a different story.. but CHS locked up S fla. if think he 'cheated' so be it..

And couldnt care less about Miami,,just common sense based on era, state of program in 79
