I think it's actually two different groups of UK fans you're noticing. It seems to me the anti-cal group has tended to be VERY high on Sheppard and rightfully so IMO. Meanwhile, Cal has been oddly critical of him and, at times, oddly restrictive with minutes. He's clearly our best freshman but he's Cal doesn't allow him to make mistakes like he does Wagner and Edwards (who has been garbage despite having been projected, previously, as the number one pick in this year's draft). With both of them out last night, Cal had no choice but to play Sheppard and Dillingham constantly. The fans that have been, like Cal, critical of "goldenboy" Sheppard, are the Cal defenders. If you look on the board now, there is a strong correlation between those criticizing/blaming Sheppard and those who tend to defend Cal at every chance. Since Sheppard was the primary defender, and often a completely lost one, on y'all's hottest shooter last night, Cal defenders see this as low hanging fruit for blaming someone other than Cal.
he can transfer to UF and make a lot of people happy with 24-8-6, myself very much included! #pipedream
That's one miserable fan base. They're whining that they may have to be a 4- or 5-seed in the NCAAT. The horror!
We tend to delete a LOT of posts when a coach is on the ropes. Muschamp was the worst. Some of the stuff that got deleted was a little scary. Much of that garbage doesnt see light for more than a couple minutes before it is reported and removed .
Well, if that’s true, UK has the clout and largesse to find another coach. Don’t you think UK is good to very good this year but can’t blow out upper tier SEC teams like the fans want? They are going to get a very good seed in the NCAA and like every other team wants to go on a 6 game winning streak. Most teams would be happy to have the yearly results as UK; the UK fans are unhappy if they don’t win it all several times per decade; that’s not realistic. It reminds me of the silly expectations UT football fans have every year; and every year it never materializes.
Sad state of affairs. There is so much horrifyingly wrong in the world that people need to understand that sports is just fun and games.
Some posters are harsh and mean; I think this is to be expected with the volume of posters on GC. You would know more than me but I’m thinking the harsh posters regularly appear on these boards. It’s like some fans boo at college football games; I never would but a certain amount of fans do and I abhor it. It’s kind of is what it is. I would not want to be a moderator on these boards.
Cal is locked into a horrible contract that UK seems unwilling to buy him out of. And I'm not sure Cal has done poorly enough to spend 50 mil or whatever to replace him. I do think we're good or very good. But that's not the goal. Also, the problem isn't that UK isn't "blowing out upper tier SEC teams." Again, some of you are trying to assess UK fan reactions while looking at last night, or this season, in a vacuum. This was supposed to be better than a "good to very good" year. UK hasn't been back to the final four since 2015! Every other "blueblood" has been there and/or won a title since. Picture Alabama football fans after 10 years without making the final four. It would then be disingenuous to say about their fans "look at how entitled they are that they're not satisfied with a new years day bowl!" That's not their standard like it's not UK's standard to take a 6 seed and be happy with it - hoping to make the second weekend of the tournament. Teams/fans have different expectations and they absolutely should. UK football fans are happy with consistent bowl games, even relatively bad ones - while never having a chance at even winning the east! Would Florida football fans take that? Bama and UGA fans wouldn't and shouldn't. But it's realistic for Kentucky football - just like doing better than Cal has, for a while now, is realistic for UK basketball. And I'm all for not making the tournament the single measure of success for a coach or team! I've said that for years on here. The problem is, we're not exactly winning SEC titles either! I think I heard correctly that UK has won exactly 1 SEC tournament game in the last 4 years. Kentucky's expectations should be what Kansas has been doing for a while now: often or usually winning their conference, usually having very good NCAA tourney seeds and then the chips fall where they may. We're not close to that for a while now.
From their site, I believe referring to Clayton. Several posts refer to "Box head". Lot's of good stuff over there. They kept whinning about the missed FT at the end, why they didn't foul at the end of regulation and up 3, and Sheppard can't play D "Box head has outplayed our guards both games, can’t get over this dude, who is this guy." and "A fence post could fake Reed out. Cal needs to make him do three point defense drills for a week."
Have not read it yet but let me guess what they said.. "Florida is beneath us" "We are Florida's superbowl" "We still own Florida and Tim Tebow doesnt play basketball" Yadda..yadda..yadda...lol
Thanks REM, always value your expertise. There at the end of regulation I thought the Cats had us. I was banging off the walls. Tonight I can actually re-watch and enjoy the contest. My nerves were splintered last night. It seemed you guys had an answer for every run but thankfully Samuel, Pullen and Clayton kept us in it. From my perspective the Gators are improving this season. I like this squad. Fun to watch compared to the offensive struggles of recent teams. Anyway, kinda weird that reality has kinda shifted and we have to get our "groove thang" on you guys in basketball while you pound us to dust on the gridiron. Be well my Cat friend!
Yes, Florida is geographicaly SOUTH of KY when looking at a globe or map. Yes, KY, (at least for me) is our most exciting SEC opponnent in basketball. I think Disney may have more ownership of Florida than the U of K actually. Tebow and basketball? Well I think he does play a pick up game every now and then.
It's interesting that our record pretty much matches UK and yet they are ranked in the top 10, but will be sliding down a bit. I'd say our schedule is every bit as tough and yet we aren't close to being ranked.
Good enough. But, the reality is we both play in a rugged conference and no game, particularly road games are a given. The NCAA tourney is a one and done event where great teams struggle and sometimes lose early. The good mid-major teams are no cakewalk. Personally, I don’t understand many fans but it’s ok as long as they are supportive and decent fans. I’ll say this as a complement to you guys; I know two important players were out last night; except for the announcers, I heard no excuses about this contributing to the loss. Then again, I’m not perusing the UK boards. And, thank you and Daily Doublecat for being great fans and sharing your knowledge about UK basketball on this forum. I’ve been reading your posts for many years.
I was one of the Mike White supporters. I just didn’t think we needed a change. That said when we got Golden, I was really happy with it and I’ve had the opportunity to meet him in person and have a quick conversation. He’s my guy and I support him 100%. White had to go anyways, because the fanbase was divided. I’m hoping we give Golden the chance to succeed here and allow him to grow and improve. Impatience by unrealistic fans is my chief concern.
Although we have many of the same folks who post here in NBN and Swamp Gas . . . NBN is definitely different (in a good way).
