True, but still hard to think you would do that if you were a fan. I suppose we will see. You may be right. Like I said, I considered it, just didn't seem like it made the most sense
Certainly could be a racist or other bad actor, no doubt. But why not just shoot at it, throw paint on it, or acid or something? Why go to the trouble of stealing it? Guess we may eventually find out.
The home plate stand Jackie was on doesn't appear that it was getting a great deal of maintenance. Hope they find it and it can be repaired properly.
Hate to say it, but wonder if someone stole this just for the metal value. Not sure how they think they can melt it down, but I wouldn't be surprised.
It wouldn't surprise me if the perpetrator turns out to be a racist triggered by the removal of statues of Confederate generals who decided to respond in-kind.
I did a fair amount of reading this morning and one article says that they informed the scrap yards to let them know to inform LE if someone tries to sell a lot of bronze. But I still think the most likely explanation of someone with racist motivations stealing it. Could be wrong
I've got a friend who is a yard foreman at a massive metal scrap yard. People bring in statues, manhole covers and railroad pieces, utility polls, etc. He has to stall them until the cops come. They're not the brightest folks, that's for sure.
I guess a racist motive would be more disheartening than the other motives mentioned, but defacing a sacred monument like this for any reason is extremely disheartening.
If added to a metal dumpster and weighed it could slip through, but it would not bring much. Part of our fund raising is actually recycling unsellable/damaged donations that have metal. Entire 40 ft dumpsters of metal bring very small amounts of money relative to what they look like.
People will steal anything and for no reason. Way back when my dad bought a house and we were moving in, we found a St. Augustine city limit sign in the garage.
