Didn't see a thread on this, but it's getting a lot of attention. I haven't dug into the enforcement mechanisms and imagine that could be tough. It will also be interesting to see how it plays out in the courts.

    MSN

Florida’s House of Representatives has greenlit what could be one of the nation’s strictest laws aimed at protecting children online, passing a bill that would bar anyone 16 and younger from using social media.

While lawmakers voiced some concerns about enforcement, parental rights and First Amendment issues, the bill passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, and on Thursday moved to the state Senate, which is expected to take up the bill soon.

“They are targeting our babies,” said Rep. Michele Rayner, a Democrat from St. Petersburg who sponsored a similar bill last year. “You all know I’m a civil rights lawyer, but the fight to protect our children on social media is a fight I will take every day and twice on Sundays.”

    ****
The bill, if passed, is likely to encounter resistance in court. Critics, including free speech advocates, say such proposals are unconstitutional.

As a parent with 3 crafty teens, i would love it to be this simple.:)

Fact is you cant really prove age and to aforementioned crafty teens, documentation is easy to fake.

What happened to parental rights? Or is that only when it pertains to drag queens?

We put age limits on all kind of stuff. I think this is great in theory but not sure that toothpaste is already out and not sure how to solve issue now.

The nanny state is at it again, doing people's parenting for them. I thought they already banned phones at school (which, fine), so what's the purpose of this if its outside of school hours and on their own time? Honestly they should just ban it for everyone if we are going down this road given how adults use it.

Most conservatives support parental rights in both cases, I assume.

    Who banned phones from school?
My daughter recently graduated from a well known public high school in this region and parents complained when school admin tried to ban phones. The school backed down and phone chaos commenced.

And for my daughter (who has that thing surgically attached) to call it chaos, is a big statement

If they can't keep the age verification proof, how do they prove that the age was verified?

Actually, in this particular case, parents can’t give their own kids permission to access these social media sites.

Enforcement of this would be a nightmare and they haven’t even said how they plan to do that.

Besides, whatever enforcement method they try kids will find a workaround in ten seconds flat.

Double edged sword. Wait till parents are getting fined and arrested because of the stuff on their kids' phones. If anything holds true, it's that parenthood has become an arena of none of the privileges and all of the responsibilities. I can't imagine why anyone would want to have kids now.

It went into effect at the beginning of the (school) year I believe. Pretty sure a few districts were already doing it.

Florida Gov. DeSantis signs bill to ban students from using phones and TikTok in schools

I think limiting kids access to the internet is a great idea for the parents. Not sure how expanding governments control is a good idea.

The ban needs to be on people 60 years and older, not the other way. Those are the ones that can't navigate all the fake shit and propaganda on the internet. Sorry to those here I just insulted.

I don't believe you. The email said that Obama's birth certificate is fake.

I’m in VA, and we have a “no phones during instruction” policy, and it is lunacy. If I policed that, it is ALL I would do, 50 hours a week.

A war on social media would make the war on drugs look like a screaming success.

Interestingly enough, even DeSantis urged caution on this piece of legislation
