How Donald Trump Divided Republicans on Immigration “Just as senators were closing in on a deal that Republican negotiators said would constitute the most conservative border security bill in decades, Donald Trump was closing in on the G.O.P. presidential nomination. “And his vocal opposition to the compromise, which would also send tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine, now threatens the chances of the entire package in a divided Congress.” I can understand republicans requiring immigrants south of Mexico to wait there while their asylum requests are considered. I can’t understand throwing the entire bipartisan bill out the window. Politics is the art of compromise, which is all but extinct thanks to right wing extremists and/or republicans without a backbone.
That's because they don't want an immigration bill. A bipartisan immigration bill gets shot down by Republicans every time. They only want a border wall because it drums up votes
Same thing with health care ... Republicans have proven they are more interested in complaining and dividing people, but have no ideas (or desire) to fix things. Trump failed to build his wall and have Mexico pay for it ... has he provided any new ideas?
I suspect that no matter what is presented, it will be shot down. Trump doesn't want any Biden "victories" even if it is good for the US. Because he isn't about what's good for the US. If the Democrats were smart, Biden would institute more stringent policy on border security AND Senate Democrats would approve the compromised bill, without Ukraine funding, and place it firmly on the House Republicans. THEN campaign with that. But Democrats have shown to be not so good at politics so....
Agree except as to funding for Ukraine, which I personally think is essential.....unless we want to leave our allies hanging and allow Russia to conquer Ukraine.
I don't disagree with funding the Ukraine defense, but I'm not a fan of smorgasbord bills. I think anything worth doing should be passed or not passed on its own merits.

The States don’t appear to be cowering … We can easily draw a through-line from the Yellow Vests to the Canadian Truckers to the Dutch Farmers to Danielle Smith to the situation on the Texas border, which is clearly spiraling out of control but in a very good way. Don’t understand how anyone can have a debate on an immigration bill that nobody, other than select few, have seen a single sentence of text.
seems binary. Not opposed to helping Ukrainians with some weopons, but your second sentence loses me. Telling me our European allies in total are unable to defend themselves or Ukraine against a stalled Russian ground campaign that has WWII level air cover. Do the pols, Italians, Spanish, French, Brits, Germans not have ability to fund and support this without us ? Not saying US may or may not may have a role but jees. If the euros are so afraid of Russian expansion why aren’t they all in with their own aid to Ukraine yesterday?
