If you can't explain your position without expressing your belief that a "GOD" gave us the 10 commandments, then you are losing this argument.

Just quoting this to see if there was some kind of hidden text or something so it would make more sense.

GOD did create the Ten Commandments... when did I say that he didn't?

What does that have to do with whether the ten commandments are religious? They don't predate religions...

Wait, you think the ten commandments predate religions? Because, if so, you are factually wrong. Very wrong.

Most of the charity to churches is for the operation of the churches, plus people don’t give to their church solely out of generosity. To a degree it is an obligation, especially those religions that encourage tithing.

I’m not saying any of that is bad, I’m just pushing back on the notion that conservatives are by their nature more generous.

Liberals are less likely to complain about their tax obligations than conservatives. Most tax dollars one way or other support a public good. If conservatives were truly more generous they wouldn’t complain as much about contributing their share to their country’s needs.

Talarico apparently thought what he said needed to be said. I agree. HIs points were well made and a necessary reminder of the 1st amendment to keep government out of religion.
And you don't know what Talarico knows about the woman. He acknowledged her as a devout Christian, and did not "accuse her" of "not feeding the poor." He does not appear to be a careless man, but one who has goals and acts deliberately. He said his concern was the bill was mandating a 10 commandments poster in school classrooms rather than being one making provision to feed the hungry, clothe the poor, and heal the sick. True acts of Christian charity rather than a token self congratulatory pat on the back for an attempt to place 10 commandments posters on Texas classroom walls. Virtue signaling does not put food in a hungry child's belly.
Were they twisted? Or did he expand the definition of what they mean in actual practice in today's world? The benefit of encouraging words and charitable actions is synergistically magnified when the combined energy of those words and actions is efficiently focused onto a common cause.

I think by throwing in a reference to 'socialist government spending' you're contributing to the sort house divided against itself collapse Jesus cautioned of and Lincoln reiterated at Gettysburg. This is what we are hoping to avoid.

    So...? And...?

I'm going out on a limb here, but other than the times Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment and he replied the greatest commandment is to "love God with your heart, mind, and soul, and the 2nd is to love your neighbor as yourself." I cannot recall a biblical passage where Jesus "commanded" his faithful and disciples to give to the poor. That's not saying it was not advised, because for good, noble, and specific reasons charitable giving was encouraged a number of ways in the gospels. But offhand I cannot recall a verse reading Jesus commanded an act of charity. If there is one that can be read or interpreted as a command please let me know.

While reading the last paragraph it occurred to me it's more a case of Christians like you projecting that sort of dogmatized God onto the Hindi, the Muslim, the atheist, agnostic, Democrat, and of course the Republican.
Unlike evangelicals or fundamentalist Christians, progressive Christians are not discouraged, restricted, or offended from thinking about God in limitless unrestricted terms or being vulnerable to being knocked off his throne or stripped of authority by how someone envisions or comprehends God. Progressives have moved on from the need to use ancient metaphorical language when speaking of "God."
How does a mere human "strip God and Jesus of their divine authority"? You are projecting a diminished God off 'his' throne and stripped of authority, one you apparently believe less offensive to the "progressive left." 'That' projected God, defined and limited by rigid religious doctrines, does not exist. Whatever and however infinite source energizes, powers, and breathes life into what we recognize as Eternity, the isness of universal existence, is not contained or limited by human imagination or desires for vengeful retribution for perceived offenses, nor offended by our inability to comprehend the infinite scope of the universe. God, does not care what we believe. The harm we inflict on ourselves and others is perpetrated by our ceaseless offensive actions.

Aside from my responses to your post, another set of commandments came to mind. The six commandments listed in Mark 10.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’”

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

    ___________________

The #'s 1-4 Mosaic commandments concerning God are omitted, along with #10's prohibition against coveting. Those concerning the sinful actions of mankind are expanded. In this list merely coveting a neighbor’s wife is not a sin; only the act of adultery would be a sin. Coveting another's possessions isn't the sin, until unhealthy covetousness gives way to an act of theft. There are no crimes of intention or temptation in the list of six. It's all about how we treat other people.

Jesus added a prohibition against fraud, missing in the original decalogue. The missing 4 are concerned with man's attitude towards God and the Sabbath, the God you think the progressive, the leftist, the Muslim, the Democrat and Republican(?!) despise. The 4 omitted commandments don't address objectionable actions and offenses people commit against one another contained in the list of six. They are cautions against idolatry. As was Talarico's response to Rep Candy Noble.

[Thou shalt have no other gods before me]
[Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image . . . ]
[Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy god in vain...]
[Observe the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy
    . . .]

So then belief in god is religion, that's literally the definition ... see ... you are losing this argument.

Your belief that the 10 commandments came from a god is based on faith in an invisible superhuman power, not facts, and therefore it's religion.

You keep saying that. Can you name the source where the Ten Commandments originally appeared, then? And also offer up some proof (not based on faith, but actual proof) that they came from a god?

So I heard that there were originally 15 commandments but Moses dropped one of the 3 stone tablets walking down the mountain, it broke, and that is why we have 10.

Do you have teenagers? Their pics are posted 20 times a day on their own social media. This is no different than a public Instagram feed. All of us have pics of our kids on those. Its not like he is posting their current location and sending their gps coordinates.

You dont consider Salvation Army, World Vision or Compassion International as falling under those umbrellas?

And I'd like to see that data. I can promise you as someone very tied to the non profit sector, I dont see that. In this town of relatively 400K they pretty much ALL are run by churches or religious affiliations.

You also arent accounting for the fact that 60% of shelters may house 80% of the people.

    What is the danger?
Some bad guy knows that his kids were in Boone when it was snowing?

My son was shown on TV during a game in Boone.

My daughter was on TV several times from sitting right behind the goal posts.

But no one knows where she is at this moment, and if they went to Boone to find her they would be disappointed.

The danger is posting repeated location patterns. I posted pics of my family at a Clippers game 8n LA two weeks ago on ky social sites. So what? So did half the people in the arena.

Actually, religion is not the belief. It is the works that accompany belief.

Belief can exist without the ritual of religion.

Jesus said the only pure religious act was "looking after orphans and widows in their distress".

Most of what man has made is just that. Man made.

    Religion is not belief.
    Belief is not religion.
