If we keep saying Billy is on the hot seat, then he'll be perceived as a lame duck and no good OC will come here. I'm convinced if we can get to Lagway sophomore year, with improved OL, then suddenly Billy will look great as OC.

The negativity is disgusting. Yep, we suck but maybe he will turn it around. I’ve been thinking 25 from the beginning. I think we could have won a couple more games in tge meantime but you can’t do anything about the past.

AR was pretty talented. We need a stellar line not just a stud qb.

Completely agree! Look at how different the play calling was with AR and O’Cyrus on the line as opposed to Mertz last year. If anything, it shows a willingness to call plays to your strengths. Heck, even with Brown at QB the play calling was somewhat tweaked. A more cohesive line with a dual threat quarterback is more what Napier is looking for to run the offense he wants.

so you are saying it’s a matter of execution and not play calling

he was very talented, but didn’t have “it”. He never saw a 4th pass out of bounds he didn’t like.

I had never seen that before in all the years I’ve been watching football, and he did it multiple times in just the last game against f$u, and several other games too. smh

Sorry to rehash the same points on different threads. IMO, the OC position is right up there with Napier's tenure as is the STs and O-line coaching. It needs to be fixed. No movement means he either is oblivious or he is being stubborn, with the possibility that he is waiting for some contracts to expire for some reason. We shall see about the contracts situation soon.

To me, if he continues down the same path, he will still have problems with the offense not quite getting it and his calling time outs oddly, the same lack of urgency at the end of halves/games, and calling odd "gotcha" plays at bad times. To me, he is now "all-in" for a potentially transcendent QB (Lagway) to fix the malaise while Mertz holds the position until he is ready. And perhaps the way to that goal is to make the defense be much better.

It may work to perfection and the optimism begin to grow in earnest. But as I have said plenty of times, he is playing with fire. One major brain fart and he isn't going to be on the hot seat, he is going to be in a rampant wildfire of discontent by the Great Unwashed. He has burned through all his political capital.

If Billy is the OC next season, first time he runs it on 3rd and 11 during the Miami game, the home crowd will be raining down boos. And deservedly so. He may believe in himself but all analytics show he has never been a great OC. Best is like 40ish when looking at SP+. With that type of offensive ranking, data says you need a top 5 defense to be a playoff contender. There is no chance our defense will be top 5. Wish we were top 50 at this point, which is possible.

the offense we run is outdated and not near a championship caliber offense. The offense may have been better than our a defense and special teams but that is a super low bar. (Adjusted for opponent, if you include Texas and Ok, our offense ranked 11 out of 16 in sec which is below the average so while better than the defense, it still is not good).

if Napier goes into the season as OC…the pressure on him will be enormous (and it will already be high pressure)- not just how the offense performs, but when / if special teams makes a mistake (not enough men on field) or we have a boneheaded clock management issue (people will rightly argue that Napier isn’t managing special teams and the clock cuz he is too involved with just the offense)….if the same issues continue he will be toast.

A coach shouldn’t make changes just cuz fans want change. But…a good leader will see where we have issues and address them. We have two o line coaches and it is the worst recruiting position on the team. (And they were bad last year by most analytics).

fans rightfully called for Todd Grantham to get canned but Mullen kept him (and his friend Hevesy) at the expense of the success of the team. Because he did so, he tied his future to Grantham and lost. Had he fired Grantham I bet Mullen would have had more rope for another year.

if Napier doesn’t make offensive changes- he may end up fired if the team doesn’t succeed and UF will be the last major program he will coach as a head coach (could certainly be a head coach at a lower program). It is certainly his decision what to do and I get betting on yourself. And we shall all get to see how it turns out.

Play calling for the Eagles this year was terrible.

Too many bubble screens it was a big joke among Eagles fans.

Same players on O as last year and huge drop off.

The best part of this argument is "we have two OL coaches and it is the worst recruiting position on the team." One could make an argument that we had bad luck at OT last year, and we got portal guys where we needed them this year. That said, if the OL isn't a strength this year Billy would look quite dumb for keeping the current model. Thought I heard that contracts were running out soon so some change may yet occur, but if things remain as they are then I imagine Billy understands the bets he's made and what happens if they don't pan out.
