I think he could have left it at it’s simply unconstitutional. That would have been a sufficient response. Any comments beyond that were unnecessary IMO.

I found his comments somewhat presumptuous when he accused the woman of not feeding the poor. He does not know what the woman does in her private life in the area of charity to the poor. It would be Christian of him to apologize to the woman for that comment.

And I think it is also presumptuous to twist Christ’s words about helping the poor and make them about socialist government spending programs. I don’t believe a single heavenly award will be given for socialist government spending because it is not giving out of personal charity like Christ actually commanded us to do. What we do know on a statistical level is his Democratic constituency does not give to the poor from personal charity as much as their conservative Christian counterparts do. The commandment to help the poor was for you and I, not the government.

I think what is appealing about this man to the Twitter user who shared this and more broadly to the progressive left is how people like to think about God and religion in this country. The 10 commandments are offensive to other religions not because other religions don’t believe in the morality that many of the commandments teach, but rather because they declare a supreme God who is above all other Gods and tolerates the worship of no other God but Himself. It is the God of the 10 commandments sitting on His throne as King, who must be obeyed and served by all, that offends the progressive left. It is that God who is King over all, including the Hindu, the Muslim, the atheist, the agnostic, the Democrat, and the Republican that offends.

If you take that God and put him in your own little nice personal progressive religious box off of His divine throne and strip Him of his divine authority, then He is no longer offensive to the progressive left. But the fundamental question is if we strip God and Jesus of their divine authority have we created another God in our own image and misrepresented him to the Hindu, to the Muslim, to the atheist, to the agnostic, to the Democrat, and to the Republican?

The point about how you behave personally vs having government impose on you is a fair point and is exactly the point he is making in terms of the commandments being posted at a public school.

i have seen no data that republicans are more charitably minded to those in need. To the extent they may give more to charity that mostly goes to their church and most of what is given to churches is for the operation of the church not aid to those in need.

To be fair, you could say the same for the government or the vast majority of charities (those that aren’t scams). Any endeavor has administrative and logistical costs.

The problem is that government programs (whether fed, state, or local) can have the broadest reach. Especially those that have tangible benefit. If a poor kid gets school lunches, maybe their family doesn’t need to line up at the food pantry at all. Food pantry isn’t a bad thing as supplement but it’s limited and temporary reach and not the most efficient process. It shouldn’t be an either/or situation. I’d also say the way republicans disparage people in those situations isn’t very Christian. Tangental situation, but in Kentucky there is a bill proposed giving people leeway to shoot homeless for camping on private property. I don’t have to guess the party affiliations or that the authors of that bill self-identify as god fearing Christians.

I wonder if anyone has embraced a religion ... or converted a different religion ..... by seeing the Ten Commandments. Perhaps someone realized their behavior and attitude needed to change after reading them?

If the name of the list was changed to "10 good things to do" ...... I'm sure all of the irreligious would have no problem with the list. So, the problem with the Ten Commandments is not the "book" but rater its "title".

Those words (in the Ten Commandments) are NOT about religion... and that clown in the video is a complete idiot for confusing the facts.

Read the part in the Constitution and forbids moral script from the ancient past. The Ten Commandments are NOT part of a religion... they are words from a prophet given to him by a higher power..

Are you seriously arguing that a list of commandments, given by God according to a set of religions and as reported in religious texts, has nothing to do with religion? The first commandment is literally "Thou shall have no other gods before me."

Blowing Rock is good. Although throughout NC it is basically a big brand beer these days. It is on every shelf and tap. It really isnt small or local anymore.
Still some good options on their lineup though. No doubt.

“He grew up the son of a single mother going to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, a church that the Rev. Jim Rigby had turned into something of a refuge for progressive Christians in Austin.”

    Packed with explanation.

My daughter had been at App St for two years so plenty of chances to visit, but she just came home to transfer to UNCW so our Boone trips will diminish to just one a year probably.

Love having her home, but enjoy the extra excuses to get to the cabin.

In your first link, there was this, which I referenced in my prior post. To the extent conservatives are more charitable, that difference is to churches

According to Google’s figures, if donations to all religious organizations are excluded, liberals give slightly more to charity than conservatives do. But Brooks says that if measuring by the percentage of income given, conservatives are more generous than liberals even to secular causes.

In any case, if conservative donations often end up building extravagant churches, liberal donations frequently sustain art museums, symphonies, schools and universities that cater to the well-off. (It’s great to support the arts and education, but they’re not the same as charity for the needy. And some research suggests that donations to education actually increase inequality because they go mostly to elite institutions attended by the wealthy.)

I think liberals are happy to pay a bit more in taxes to serve that charitable purpose. Conservatives think it should come from individuals, and gives them more ownership of where their money goes to. So in a sense it’s on brand.
The other thing is that republicans are more likely to be rural. There’s a much deeper culture of helping your neighbor in smaller towns because historically people had to help each other to get by. I’ve mentioned before that I spent summers in a small town in Iowa as a kid, and that lesson came home to me almost instantly. Some of my friends would come over to my grandmother’s and rake her leaves or shovel her sidewalks in the winter without being asked or wanting a dime. It’s just ingrained in who they are.
