Scholarship football players at Uf get waaaaaaaaay more than 15k/yr in benefits. Probably closer to your 200k mark than the 15k mark. We literally just had a punter decomitt with this as his stated reason. He opted for the scholly at Cal, vs the nil package at UF. It’s not a thing. The top kids are going to go where they get both.

It would take some serious compensatiin to make up for a scholly.

Nothing extra money can’t make up for but letting a warm body sit in a room is cheaper than cash.

I’m curious on the math that makes it 200k.

Mark my words you’ll see schools with over 85 players on the roster with NIL deals helping fund it.

It’s already being talked about at other school who are making the most of the wild west with NIL

Nil companies owning their own perks for players could happen if it’s not already happening.

The kind of players you want in your 85 are not taking these kinds of deals. Period. If you want to set up and fund a program that includes taking care of all the things scholarship athletes have taken care of for them, have at it. Until then, it’s not going to be a thing. Even then, it’s unlikely to be as productive as you want to believe. Show me a program that’s filling up the last 20 spots of their 105 man roster with players who are seeing meaningful pt. Show me a program that’s getting any more meaningful pt out of the walk on spots than they were prior to NIL. You may get some special teams guys this way, but lots of those guys came in as walk ons anyway. The bottom of the 85 are generally unproductive as it is.

Bama did a similar thing for years with the “grey” shirt and that was before legal pay for play.
Good way to stockpile talent. The free agency may thwart it with players being able to leave for greener pastures however.

Tuition, books, housing, food, tutors, pocket change, the list goes on for days. That’s not even accounting for the staff in place to book and manage all these things for them. Scholarship athletes also have more security on the roster, and more access to coaches and training table during the off season. Walkons can be cut for no reason before the season even starts. Who do you think is going to be trimmed down to get the numbers right? Scholarship athletes have a guaranteed spot on the roster. They may not be renewed at the end of the season, but unless they break some rules, they’ll be a part of the team at least through the season.

Oh, jesus christ, with the grey shirts again. You need to do some research on what a grey shirt is. It was a very rare thing that made almost no sense for the athlete or the school, and rarely ever happened.

But would it be difficult to add say 20 guys on ? They aren’t covered by scholarship, they are covered by a nil fund, but they are treated nearly same way. I think that’s the idea.

I fully understand the idea, I just don’t think you will fill these spots with anything other than what you traditionally fill these spots with, which is players that don’t see the field. The resources needed to give them a similar experience would be put to better use by spending more to lure better guys to fill the 85. We’re struggling to compete there as it is. I just don’t see many players that will ever see meaningful pt going this route, outside of ST guys who walk on at a high rate as it is. Anyone good enough to actually play at this level is going to be offered NIL, a scholarship, and everything that comes with it somewhere else. I don’t think you’ll “hit” on these players any more often than you traditionally “hit” on a walk on. It’s just not worth the resources.

On the socials rival fans are dumb enough to believe UF self reported to fire Billy with cause. They're scared to death of him bring UF back from Mullen’s ashes.
