I assume that he requested the continuance at least nominally because he needed the time to attend the funeral perhaps because he wanted to spend time of Melania prior to her mother's funeral. It would seem that if he did, in fact, need the time he would not have scheduled a campaign appearance. Maybe it's just me but it looked an awful lot like his request for the continuance was just another one of his stunts maybe an attempt to demonize the judge and garner sympathy from his supporters. Once again as far as his time is concerned a voluntary appearance in a court isn't much different than a campaign rally the attendance at both of which was completely optional.
While I agree with you, the judge does have to consider the needs of the jurors and a lot of other people. Moreover, had Trump’s presence at the damages hearing been essential, I agree, a one day continuance would have been appropriate. The judge undoubtedly thought his presence at court wasn’t essential, and that he causes a scene anyway.
If he feels compelled to schedule 16+ hours to get a lot done he certainly wouldn't need a continuance from a voluntary court appearance. No one forced him to attend the trial. It was a civil trial on the amount of damages and he wasn't scheduled to testify.
The judge did say he would grant a delay until next week if his team wrapped up their defense other than his testimony being the only remaining thing. Otherwise, they should continue to present their case in his absence if he chose to not attend the trial that day. Not an unreasonable position when you consider the time of everyone else involved like you mentioned.
Federal employees receive up to 2 weeks of bereavement leave. I think we can manage a 1-week break for the former president. Showing your colors, bruh..
Federal bereavement for employees is irrelevant. Trump does not need to attend the trial and as I noted in my other response, the Judge stated he would delay the trial if Trump was needed on the stand. Maybe he'd have more goodwill with the judge if his team didn't keep trying stall tactics and attacking the judge. Not to mention, the only reason this trial is happening is 100% on Trump because he can't help himself from defaming E. Jean Carroll. So no, I don't have any sympathy for him. If you want to know how I really feel, I don't think he even cares that his mother-in-law died. Melania has been missing for weeks while she cared for her mother. During that time, Trump has been seen at parties and rallies. It's crocodile tears to get sympathy and hopefully delay the trial a while.
So, because his wife's mom died, he needs to speed up his defense? I love all these talking points which are intended to excuse the judge's pettiness, but instead reveal the kangaroo court for what it is. Why don't you just say the judge should hang him and get it over with?
I'm pretty sure Trump has a right to be at his own trial and be there for his wife in bereavement. People grieve in different ways. Judging people by their actions at a time like this is something a shitty person does.
Could not have said it any better. He's still winning the game of 4D chess, because actual judges are being needlessly petty and it's an easy talking point for a guy like Trump. It also reveals the level of compromise of our courts.
Trump's appearance in court during the day he attended the funeral was optional. If it was mandatory, different story. Trump also had campaign appearances scheduled during this same time. If he was truly grieving, and cleared his calendar for a 3-day period to mourn, perhaps the Judge would have had more sympathy. When my MIL passed, I took a full week and completely cleared my schedule from all work and everything else. Trump didn't even take a full day.
As a point of information Trump had requested a one week adjournment including both the day before and the day of the funeral and on the prior to the funeral he did hold the campaign rally. Maybe Trump's request for a continuance was limited to the day of the funeral it would have been granted even though once again Trump's presence was not required at the trial. Every time Trump speaks at a rally or posts on social media he displays the real Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS), a combination of feigned victimhood (the media is picking on poor Donald and it's a witch hunt) and outrage combined with a massive outpouring of fabrications.
You used the wrong meme although such errors are common among supporters of the defeated indicted former president. Fixed it for you.
