Went to IMG to get offers, immediately after committing to UF transferred back to NJ for senior season. Had a pedestrian senior season. Was in the dog house of Coach Chaos due to work ethic and basically out the door after half the football season. Overrated.

I was/am going to make a thread about this but I was wondering with where kids end up at, who were highly rated (top 200) coming out of HS who hit the portal within their first two years in college, does that show they were over ranked by sites coming out of HS and those lower tier schools they end up transferring to were more indicative of their skill level?

like Look at Mario Williams. Top 5 WR coming out of Plant City 3 years ago ending up at OU where he didn’t do anything before following behind Lincoln Riley to USCw where he didn’t do ANYTHING worthwhile and now is at Tulane.

In reality, was he ALWAYS a Tulane level talent even coming out of HS???

Eli Drinkwitz is an Arkansas Tech Wonderboy… that explains so much of his douchey personality.

be an interesting read/discussion. I’m all for it.

these transfer announcement’s should more likely read “…was likely over rated as a top 100 prospect by Rivals” vs touting them as a top 100 prospect in their class.

Yea, I don't have any data to support it, just going off pure observation you know? Like for UF....I know we've been down record wise recently, but Kamari Wilson was a top 50 kid coming out of HS and two years later, he's at Arizona State. The big dogs didn't even take a flyer on him once he entered the portal.

Look at Will Norman. Top 150 kid and in the portal his best options were Syracuse and then Marshall.

I don’t think it’s a talent problem as much as an effort problem. There are some that are really good players but just don’t love the game.

Forgot about that aspect as well. Some are playing just because it was what they were pushed to do growing up.

I'm also forgetting kids sometimes commit to a school and not a school that's best suited for their skill set/scheme.

Unless the player is an EW3 type, it can be hard to stand out in a stacked receiver position. Unless the elusiveness is so apparent, the player is going to have to get polished and not be a playground ball guy. It took Kadarius Toney 4 years and a good teaching coach to get there despite his obvious elusiveness. It is a big step up and can take some time.

i was just using Mario Williams as an example, but there’s plenty others to choose from.

Just wild, removing context from the situation, a kid can be a top 50 high 4* kid and a year or two later be transferring from Bama to USF.

They can also be good enough to start at qb at a top 5 program and lead their team to an 11-1 record and then transfer to Syracuse (see McCord, OSU). Go figure.

Yea, the transition to college is a big one, where hard work is required because of the competition. For guys that never had the work ethic and everything came easy because of their innate talent, they will quickly fall behind those willing to put in the work.

There is a reason coaches say hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

Also, success at one level does not always translate to success at the next, whether it’s high school to college or college to NFL. Lots of factors and busts along the way.

My guess is that the issue is going to become a LOT more problematic due to NIL. You just can't give high school kids a ton of money and expect them to remain motivated and keep working hard. Immaturity, human nature is going to take over in a lot of cases and these kids are going to find out there is still work to be done
