Speaking of Collinsworth… dude has always been one of my hero’s. Got a picture of him holding me at Gator media day when I was like 3.
but there is a viral video going around of Chris making INSANE comments to a reporter as a young player in the league… stuff about how “young he likes ‘em” etc. And whatever you think “too young is… subtract a bunch. It’s super weird. Looks like he’s heading for cancel town

My observation is that it’s not really just two years. Billy runs Florida like he did Louisiana and brought many of the same staff. Obviously the sec is much more difficult than the sunbelt and he wasn’t blowing teams out there either. I don’t see much change over those 6 seasons in adaptation to how college football is trending now. Granted his hands might be tied by the UAA. I hope he does grow and adapt and become great, right now history isn’t on his side.

He's demonstrated the ability to get high school sophomores and juniors to say they are coming here. In terms of his actual recruiting success, he's behind the historical mean for the last few coaches.

Ads for the learning on the job part, maybe. But you could put me in a chemistry lab, and I might eventually figure some stuff out. But God only knows what I'd blow up first.

Nah, it's a big fat nothingburger. It first came up like 15 years ago and he apologized....

“As a family man I am extremely embarrassed by an interview I did when I was in my early twenties about dating. My comments were insulting, immature, and foolishly intended as a joke. They do not reflect how I lived my life then or now.

I was asked to do something humorous about dating, and it has been a major embarrassment to me since the day I said it.

I apologize to anyone who has ever had the misfortune to see it now or a quarter-century ago.”

I don't know why it would suddenly go "viral" again today. Actually, yes I do, because idiots with no lives love to get attention by faking outrage and pretending to be personally offended by anything and everything.

Unfortunately, we got to the point where society wants to cater to the crybabies, but hopefully the pendulum is swinging the other way and we'll quit caring about the extreme PC crowd that wants to "cancel" everyone for every little thing.

It's amazing how these stories resurface as if it hasn't already been addressed as you said. People have already forgotten they already dealt with this. The general public is like dory from finding Nemo.

Ok… didn’t know it was brought up 15 years ago… I agree we as a society cater to some things we shouldn’t… and people aren’t allowed to make mistakes anymore. What someone says as a 19 year old shouldn’t be who they are and someone is not a collection of their mistakes.
I also refuse to call someone a “crybaby” if they are sensitive about their - sexuality, gender, race, religion… people have every right to their feelings. People have the right to say offensive stuff and people have a right to be offended. Both things.
I personally WANT to know if I’m saying things that might come across as offensive… and this in particular was pretty bad. I’ve done some dumb stuff but I’ve never even hinted at a joke about hooking up with 14 year old girls.

    Very fair point. Well said.

And for the record, I hope I didn't make it seem like I was calling you a crybaby. I'm just very cynical, and feel like there's too many people out there who will fake offense and get their rocks off to making a mountain out of a molehill. For the most part, it doesn't come across as genuine to me.

My apologies for taking this thread off topic.

I haven't really followed. How many of his Lousiana coaches do we have on staff today? I honestly don't know.
But about the larger point- it' s clear you missed it.

It's that coaches CAN and do learn on the job, and CAN get better.
That the mistakes we saw last year- and there was no shortage- CAN be corrected.
If you are trying to say he made loads of mistakes at Lousiana then I'm not sure what you are talking about.

    His records at Louisiana were
    7-7
    11-3
    10-1
    12-1
So he clearly learned on the job, and got better each season there.

Will he here? I see good signs, but I don't know. No one does.

I agree he can get better, but history tells you a lot. Let's look at his last season at Louisiana and you will see some similarities with what we have at Florida (minus the wins )

    L38-18
    W27-24 *
    W49-14
    W28-20 *
    W20-18 *
    W41-13
    W28-27 *
    W45-0
    W21-17*
    W35-21
    W42-14
    W21-16 *
    W24-16 *

Great record in a lower conference where he had the most talent but lots of close one score games. 7 of them to be exact and you can't expect to win 7 one score games in the SEC.

Cris Collinsworth and Troy Aikman are my 2 favorite color commentators. They just know pro football in and out and explain things extremely well, IMO. However, they both work for corporate giants who write their huge checks and so when they start getting into opinions outside of the game at hand, I'm very skeptical and tend to not pay too much attention to what they say.

Wait, you are complaining about all of his WINS?? You are complaining about a 12-1 record??
After taking over a 5-7 team??
    Wow, just wow.

It sounds like you just want to complain...

As an FYI- at one point we hired a guy who went 8-3 at his last stop.
He got blown out twice and also lost to a very mediocre South Carolina team.
In addition- he only beat Army- ARMY- by a measly 6 points...

I bet you complained about him too.

So because they work for NBC they don't know much about the culture and huge role it plays on a football team.
Both were on Super Bowl teams, but their decision means nothing because of their employer?

If you were talking about politics or the economy, I agree their opinion doesn't mean much.
But re-building football teams? I think they know a lot about that.

Jesse is "lucky to have a job?!?" He gets many of the top CFB games, and is often on the pregame and halftime shows. Besides, he works on the Food Network and other things as well. For us older types, he reminds me of Joe Garagiola, who could call a World Series game on Monday, a golf tournament on Sunday, and a game show throughout the week. Jesse is extremely popular. Many Gators simply don't like Jesse because he is objective. Gator fans prefer Mick Hubert and other homers...

I don't think it's a totally unfounded concern given how Napier has coached with leads in his two seasons here. I keep going back to the Tennessee game as an example of how even Napier himself admitted to being too conservative to start the 3rd quarter. I think it's certainly possible that it speaks to some of our close losses.

He admitted to the mistake, which should relieve some concern. He could have said "hey, we won didn't we?". But he didn't -- he admitted his mistake, which says he's learning. Billy is learning on the job - the hard way. All we gotta do is give him time and we'll be fine.

I agree and I'm in his camp but I'm definitely guarded. I have certainly been in the "trust the coach" camp over the years but in hindsight those of us were wrong. Champ never got out of the way of the offense, maclwein never brought the program structure including S&C or a good offense and Mullen never got rid of Grantham or emphasized recruiting so there is precedent for concern.

I think you really misunderstood what I was saying which is fine. You obviously just want to jump on someone that you think is complaining, which is cool, you do you.

The actual conversation was about a coach getting better as they advance in their career, and I was bringing up that Billy coaches exactly the same 6 years in and that he plays conservative and has close one score games which doesn't bode well since you won't win all those close games.

Please continue with your bashing of others.
