Kenin has not done anything major since 2020. The closest she came was a 3rd round appearance at Wimbledon last year. Gauff made the French open finals in '22 and won the US Open last year. Recency bias is a real thing.

Is it unfortunate that Kenin had her best year in '20 when a lot of people were not paying attention to sports and so she did not get the publicly she normally would have gotten? I think that is a fair argument. However, if she has a good year this year, I think the level of publicly will take care of itself.

Yes, I promise you that if an American, any American starts winning tournaments consistently they will be a bigger deal than anyone who wins one and fades away. That's how sports work. In the mens game American TV talks way more about the top international players than any American, because we haven't had a new Pete Sampras. But if one came along, it would be media feast.

Again just using Kenin as an example. If another white girl American comes along will she get the Coco Gauff treatment or be ignored?

I would remind you the Australian Open was in January 2020 so well before the pandemic took over the news. The pandemic wasn’t even in the U.S. yet at that point. Sure it was a concern but it didn’t dominate the news until March 2020.

And if it’s based off results then explain Coco Gauff? Coco Gauff has been highly promoted for 2 years now. So for a year and a hal she was highly promoted before she ever even won a Grand Slam.

Coco qualified for Wimbledon at 15 and made it to the 4th round. She won a WTA title that same year against grown-ass adults. She's won 7 times on tour, including the US friggin Open. All before turning 20.

If you don't understand why she's hyped, you never will.

So good to see that the events of 2020 did not nothing to dampen the spirits of racists in our country.

Yep. Youngest player ever to make the main draw there. Started off by beating Venus Williams.
Hard to imagine that create much news coverage, right?

Not that hard to beat a Venus Williams at least 10 if not closer to 15 years past her prime.

I never said Coco Gauff wasn’t a good player, just that she was overhyped.

And yes if a white American woman played tennis, made the draw at a young age and ended up winning 3, 4, 5 Grand Slam titles I do not believe she would get the same attention and recognition as Coco Gauff. The Media and the USTA just won’t support a woman’s player nowadays unless they are black or at least multi-racial but preferably black.

I think if you have an American female win the Aussie Open and then make the semi’s or finals in another major, she is going to get a lot of publicity.

The point I think you are trying to make is that there appears to be an effort to keep the Williams Sister Affect going in tennis, similar to what the PGA is trying to do with the Tiger Effect in golf. Both sports were long considered niche sports that were mainly played by the wealthy and did not have a large following when compared to football, baseball, etc. The Williams sisters, along with some other greats on the men’s side, really brought a lot more attention to the sport, which meant more sponsors, bigger purses, and more more money for everyone involved. Now that the Williams are retired the WTA is facing the same worry the PGA is facing, a big decrease in wide public interest. Both sports are looking for a new the face of the sport and are having a hard time finding one. I think this is more trying hype the most recent successful young talent to keep the public interested.

I have a problem with the fact that any white American who doesn’t apologize every day for being white is labeled a racist, both on this board and in the U.S. as a whole.

I have a problem with the fact that white people get no credit at all for helping make race relations better on this country despite putting the needs of another race above their own.

Let me re-emphasize that. Modern day whites are the ONLY race in history that has ever put the needs and interests of another race before their own. We even elected a black man to the highest office in the U.S. But again no credit given.

You sure as heck wouldn’t see a white person elected to President in a majority black country. You sure as heck wouldn’t ever see a white person ever elected to President in a Hispanic, Asian or Middle Eastern country.

Exactky what I’m saying, thank you. The thing is they only want that new star to be black. If they’re white they won’t support them and because of that sponsors won’t support them.

I understand the USTA looking for a new tennis superstar to replace Serena Williams or the PGA looking for a superstar to replace Tiger Woods. But race shouldn’t have anything to do with it. Sadly though it is.

If this is happening it’s because of MONEY. They want a wider audience which means more dollars. Move to China if you don’t like capitalism.

I think that if a US women came out and won two out of the four majors this year, the USTA would make her the face of women’s tennis regardless of what color she is. They need to have someone to market to the casual fans of the sport and a one time major winner isn’t it, when you have champions with 10+ major wins and that is what the public now expects.

And you are clearly getting in the spirit by posting some kind of weird racial grievance with tennis

You are entitled to your opinion and maybe you’re right. But I just don’t agree.

I think a white American girl could come out of nowhere and win all 4 Grand Slams this year and it would get some coverage but still relatively minimal because the girl is white.

But if Coco Gauff or another black American girl comes out and wins all 4 Grand Slams this year she would be everywhere. And she would be compared right up there with Serena Williams, Tiger Woods, heck maybe if Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. She could potentially even win Athlete of the Year.

The coverage and exposure level I think would be totally different depending on race.
