DeBoer in 2nd year at Washington $4.2 million salary. Takes em to playoffs, great sophisticated passing game. Roster is not loaded with 4 and 5 stars. Great coaching. Now he’s at Bama w resources, $ and tradition. He may fail, but I like his chances. Great hire imo

Unless something crazy happens in the Portal, his team will have the most talent on the hoof he's ever seen in his life (at least until they play Georgia). That's a good head start.

Huh, what a concept, be physical and have a stout OL, and all that with only 1 OL coach.

“But DeBoer's emphasis on winning in the trenches is apparent. Washington's offensive line just earned the 2023 Joe Moore Award, given to the nation's top unit. The Huskies didn't allow a sack in their Sugar Bowl win against Texas -- a future SEC opponent -- despite playing against a Longhorns defensive front anchored by a pair of potential first-round NFL Draft picks in T'Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy II.”

DeBoer made sure to place an emphasis on physicality when previewing his vision for the Crimson Tide.

"We will be explosive; I can promise you that. We will be aggressive. We will attack," DeBoer said. "You know, we understand that the game was meant to be played one way still and that's to be physical. Dominating the line of scrimmage and controlling it from both sides of the ball will always be a staple of our program."

Nick Saban's '100% access' to Alabama team among five things we learned from Kalen DeBoer's press conference

I have to say I was surprised. I didn't think any high-profile coach would want to follow Saban but DeBoer decided to gamble. He reminds me of Meyer when he became our coach. It remains to be seen if he can do at Bama that Meyer did at Florida but Meyer didn't have the pressure of following Spurrier since he followed Zook. Not sure what will happen but people did say Meyer is coming from the WAC so he's going to get his just desserts and the same thing with Saban when he was hired at LSU, that he's not a southern boy and he's going to lose big time, yet he wins a NC and sets up Miles for another and LSU has been a blue chip program ever since.

He found a way to take advantage of transfer portal and built a very senior laden team.

Would be my first choice if we got rid of Napier. Thinking that before this news even broke. Good offensive scheme and coaches his QBs up to RUN the offense instead of looking to the sideline for audibles. We've seen that before and it went really well for us.

either way, bama went out and got a proven guy at the top level of football. Will he be successful, nobody knows, but if he can replicate what he did at washington player wise, no reason to think he won't be. The point is, they went and got a A class coach, we went and got a B rated JV coach. If napier wasn't an anlayst with Saban, he's not even on our radar at all.

which made me wonder, since I don't recall his name ever came up in our most recent coach search. Was DeBoer even on Strickland's radar, much less his short list? Or is Strickland only interested in coaches in the Southeast? I am not a Strickland supporter by any stretch of the word.

Maybe he won't pan out but given his track record AND the brand of football his team plays he is the the most desirable coach right now in my opinion. Sucks he ended up at Bama. People denigrate Napier because of his sunbelt conference history but coaches have to start somewhere. The guy has won handily at every stop. While I support Napier for now and hope his willingness to change and adapt will be what gets him where he needs to be, I will agree that there were some red flags regarding his experience and brand of football.

Never heard him mentioned, a guy with only 2 years as head coach at Fresno probably didn't show up on anyone's radar.

(except Washington :D) plus 3 years at Sioux Falls, 3 times NAIA coach of the year. Agree with you. I just think it should have been THEE top priority of Strickland and whatever search committee there was to beat the bushes. Like I say the Huskies sure found him.

Kalen DeBoer is now widely considered one of the best offensive minds in college football. He does not call the plays and has a real OC. Nick Saban tried very hard to hire Grubb as the Bama OC to no avail before the season. Now it appears he’ll be going to Alabama, a year later.

Washington: Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb has shared that he will not be the next head coach of the Huskies. It's widely expected that this search will play out today or tomorrow. Sources tell FootballScoop Grubb is expected to join Kalen DeBoer at Alabama.

    Great point

We seem to have always wanted to hire a Saban guy. Yet then Bama doesn’t even hire a Saban guy

We always seem to want to hire based on some trait. Often this trait is based on previous failures. Offense, recruiting, CEO, etc.

What does Bama do? Find the coach with a track record of winning at multiple places.

They did it with Saban and now here. We did it with Urban. It’s by far the best predictor of success. And I’m defining it as winning more than the school baseline.
