So did I understand it right? LSU outscored OSU 0.475 points in the final rotation in a sport usually decided by hundredths of a point? I guess that's why floor, the most subjective gymnastic event, is the last routine of a dual or quad meet, and always features the home team. How better to protect the Blue Bloods of the sport, and keep their NQS scores near the requisite 197. A low 196 would have haunted LSU all year. And yes, at times, that includes the Gators.

Here's an idea. Have a coin flip to decide the order of rotation. Then let the chips fall where they may. That would level the field, and surely make the judges less impactful.

Can't agree with you on how this meet unfolded as I watched the meet. Ohio State just simply is not in the same class of athlete as LSU. The tiggers deserved their scores on the floor. Without the 2 falls on the balance beam, LSU would have scored north of 197.500 and in the range of Oklahoma.

Insofar as event order is concerned, the orders balance out with home and away meets. I'm not sure how it is decided on neutral site meets, but probably by NQS scores.

I'm with you on subjective judging sometimes getting in the way of actual performance, but what can you do? It has always been a subjective scoring sport. The sport could add coaches' challenges for their teams, but reviews required between judges who have wider than normal differing opinions already take too much time from the flow of the meet thereby affecting the gymnasts who get frozen out after warming up and while waiting for their performances.

Bottom line, gymnastics is a unique sport, and it should be approached that way.

Yep, looks good to me. :)

LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne on floor vs. Ohio State (youtube.com)

That graded out at 9.875. I'd have given her a 9.900. My deduction is too much juice on the last tumbling pass with a significant drag of the front foot. Her splits were past 180 and very high. Obviously, one judge gave her a 9.900 and the other a 9.850. Maybe she didn't have enough dance for the 9.850 judge.

UF Quad Meet Televised on SEC Network+:

Gators Opens Season Friday - Florida Gators

    Jenny Rowland Comments:

    1. First, CJR did not mention Sloane Blakely or Leanne Wong in her interview which tells me these two ladies are ready to go. In photos of Sloane, she looks to be in her best shape since arriving at UF, less weight and more muscle, looks more like sister Skye now.

    2. Described the 6 true freshmen impact as a "year of growth, development, and learning". The freshmen have worked hard and want to prove in performance that they are truly the best incoming class in the nation. The freshmen will be in lineups, up to 3 in some events, and will give good depth. Me: I presume Dani Ferris will miss the opening meet and possibly at Auburn recovering from her thumb injury, cast taken off at end of December.

    3. CJR specifically mentioned Morgan Hurd, Ellie Lazzari, and Victoria Nguyen saying Hurd and Lazzari could be in 3 to 4 events and described Nguyen as extremely graceful and an all-arounder. Hurd is going to have an impact every week, impact year.

    4. The chemistry is good. She is happy to have Trinity Thomas affecting the team from her coaching position. The upper classmen are mentoring the lower classmen, and the family chemistry is good.

She didn’t fall off, she stumbled on her landing. That’s after she didn’t wait the full second after her landing on the vault before going into her own personal rodeo style celebration and took an unneeded deduction there too.
Just don’t get why she keeps getting chances, it happens almost every meet with her. She’s the least consistent gymnast I can ever remember for this program.
Freshmen have been solid so far though.

Not sure who it was, but a Gator gymnast fell off the bars twice. 2nd one looked like it hurt.

Alyssa Arana, one of the freshmen. Which meant we had to count Sloan’s 9.575 score.
Looking to be one of our lowest scoring meets in recent memory if it doesn’t pick up. Lots of freshmen competing though in their first meet expected somewhat.

Good finish in the last 2 rotations. 197.1 and a comfortable win, as expected. Not a huge score but lots of room for improvement.
Pilgrim is going to be really really good. Heck she is already.
Good to see a Morgan Hurd back out there, solid floor routine.
The other freshmen did well all things considered, outside of that one routine.
    And Blakely, well…

Blakley, sigh. Either very good or very bad.

Freshmen looked OK. Everyone needs to clean up the landings. So many steps and hops.

Peyton must have missed something in her floor routine to get a 9.775

They won, but looked shaky against inferior opposition. Lots of new faces, but our vets need to step it up starting with the next match. Can no longer county on Trinity Thomas' super high scores to bail us out.

Surprised Ferris performed even in one event-----Pilgrim performing international has her ready-----Draser good too, the real deal-----Felt sorry for Arana, terrible way to start career-----Richards floor score?-----Blakely would have had the UF score at 197.400+ with her normal bars-----Agree, quad format ices gymnasts, will probably negatively impact regionals and nationals-----Not bad for youth and opening meet, but much improvement needed to compete successfully with Oklahoma, Utah, and the top SEC teams.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think we're one DiCello away from top 2-3 territory this year. With her, Wong & Pilgrim...and even Victoria as potential solid all-arounders, I think we'd be right up there with the best in the country. Without her, it leaves some question marks. I think we'll be solid this year, but have tempered my expectations a bit from the past few years.

I agree that the new format was tedious last night. The meet actually got a little boring to me and my daughter. I think the new made-for-tv rule should be optional, decided by whomever is hosting/presenting the event as appropriate. In the NCAA finals, yes, it makes sense. Last night it did not. Though fans of Fisk or GW might disagree.
