Same thoughts occurred to me today after reading a bit about the players. Timing is everything. Or happenstance.
Don’t get me wrong: I like Austin Armstrong and hope he is with us for many years. He has a great football mind and has lots of energy. Fortunate he’s on our side. But this guy Ron Robert’s LOOKS like a defensive football coach.
Because Toney was still at UF as DC until February of ‘23. I think Roberts was announced as DC at Auburn December ‘22.
He will have a bunch of letters after his name here including co-DC. I heard some talk last year that Billy might bring him in to prop Toney up, but nothing never materialized, Toney left and AA was brought in. Roberts went to Auburn, maybe it was a $$$ issue. Apparently he didn’t have much fun coaching for Freeze. It will be interesting to see what kind of salary he secured here.
Wonder if this effectively puts Armstrong in a lesser position, even if not by title. This guy (Brandon Olsen) loves Ron Roberts.
JMHO, my guess AA stays on the field as the hype guy and RR goes up in the booth so his experience can see the field better. So RR will be in a better position as the defensive play caller so AA can signal it in faster and get the right players on the field.
