Iranian woman whipped 74 times for refusing to wear hijab
An Iranian woman received 74 lashes for refusing to wear the hijab, defying the strict dress code even as she was taken to be whipped.
Roya Heshmati, 33, was charged with “encouraging permissiveness” after appearing unveiled on several occasions in the capital, Tehran.
“Her penalty of 74 strokes of the lash was carried out in accordance with the law and with sharia,” and “for violating public morals,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said late on Saturday.
Ms Heshmati was also reportedly ordered to pay a fine of 12 million rials (£225).
“The convicted … encouraged permissiveness [by appearing] disgracefully in busy public places in Tehran,” Mizan reported.
All women in Iran have been required by law to cover their neck and head

I admire her courage as well, but with that punishment, this incident might end up having the opposite effect.

I hope so. The people have to get sick enough of it for there to be any change.

I’ve posted it on here before, but I’ve met a few Iranian expatriates in my day. With one exception, all of them told me they couldn’t stand the Shah and were glad to see him go, and all of them told me they wished he was back with all of their hearts. The one exception, I think, had ties to the royal family. Boy, did she give me a what-for when I suggested that, maybe, the Shaw had done some things to bring the Revolution on himself.

The differences between societies are just a matter of degree. So far, our democracy, together with leaders constrained by tradition and laws, have held at bay the minority who would impose their extreme views on the masses, as is the case in Iran, for example. One has to be semi-conscious or ideologically brainwashed not to see in the America we love the current inclination toward a one party system with a dictator as head. If Trump ascends to his throne and Republicans gain control of government (aided by religious extremists who almost universally support him) the degree of separation between Iran and America will be narrowed considerably.

Sure, but Arab Spring started with a protest (self-immolation) by a sole man. When he lit himself on fire he lit a fuse for a fire that burned across the region.

I left Iran in December 1978. I was a DoD dependent. Left on a C141.

It's unfortunate that we played a role in destroying that country because of oil interests.

the start of extremism is dismissed and its assumed “it won’t happen here”. Maybe it’s just inevitable.

Of those running for potus in 2024, who would most likely support the following?

“For there is one thing we must never forget... the majority can never replace the man. .”

“ The simplicity of their minds makes them a more easy prey to a big lie than a small one. they often tell little lies but would be ashamed to tell a big one.”

Thanks to the link... I remember reading a book about Afghanistan before the war with the U.S.S.R., and how free and different that nation was... There was green everywhere... and then the war gave control to the radical religious fighters and it's never been the same ever since.

I wonder if this war had anything to do with what happened in Iran.

Didn’t the Iranian revolution happen before the Soviets invaded Afghanistan?
