About RUTS back in the 90s w/ Spurrier...
Spurrier was a disrupter. The old model was the Bear, and Spurrier did things the opposite of the Bear in almost every way.
I think most of the pushback to SOS was due to that, with the remainder being frankly a backlash to Florida being good.
The talk about RUTS was just an excuse to bash Spurrier/ Florida for that reason.
Bowden ran up the score vs the weakling ACC opponents just as much, but he "played" by the old Southern coach rules so no pushback.

I don't know of anyone running a play out of the kneel down formation before but I do know defenses try all the damn time to blow it up if it's a 1 score game.

If you can run it up...do it.

    As far as this goes...
    Isn't it interesting that...
    Winston had
    • No respect for the authority of his coach's direction- overruling it because he thought it was right.
    • No respect for a grocery stores rules- stealing the crab legs.
    • No respect for his college coach's rules- when he was suspended for a game yet still showed up in full uniform ready to go. (vs Clemson in 2014.)
    • No respect for the ACC refs- when Winston literally very forcefully pushed a ref because the ref was trying to stop the snap due to a substitution.
So with all that in the past, does anyone think Winston would have respect for a young woman's wishes when she tells him to stop, or that she wants to leave?

Bucs' Winston sued over alleged Uber incident
Or an Uber driver. The guy is one of the most unlikable characters to ever play sports and the excuses made for him because he plays football are disgusting.

He will not stay out of trouble down the road.

    This in spades.
It's funny (sad) because the consequences for touching a ref are supposed to be severe, and Winston did it twice quite purposefully.
But the ACC- THE ACC!!- basically laughed it off and said no penalty/ no consequences.

Winston learned quickly he could do whatever he wanted because football.
What a sad indictment of all the "grownups' around him- esp FSU and the ACC.

I understand somewhat, but if Atlanta has the ball with the game out of reach do they take a knee? No. So unless you are taking a knee also, don’t complain.

One thing I hate is in basketball when I’m dribbling the the ball out at the end of an out of reach game and there’s one fool out there pressing up to play defense swiping at the ball to steal it or force a 5 second call up until the last second. If I was to try and score up 20 points with 8 seconds left I’d be the jerk though, right. Smh

All these made up “sportsmanship” rules in sports are stupid as shit.

“If you’re up a certain amount in football, you have to take a knee.”

“If you’re up a certain amount in basketball, don’t shoot anymore, let the clock run out.”

“If you’re up a certain amount of runs in baseball, don’t steal base.”

Whatever happened to playing hard until the clock hits 0:00?

You might want to read posts 29 and 30 in this thread, since you are confused about why--after lining up in the victory formation- what the Saints did was wrong.

Would some of you feel the same if the roles were reversed? What if the Saints were actually going to take a knee, and the Falcons bull rushed the Saints offensive lineman? They weren’t expecting it, and the Falcons absolutely lit them up? Could cause an injury as the linemen wouldn’t be expecting it. Would that be okay then?

So who is in charge- the teammates or the coach??
But it goes to authority- are you saying that if the majority wills it then authority should be disregarded?
    It sounds like it.

As a couple have mentioned, I don't know that anyone would have been overly upset if the Saints lined up and run a play at the end. Some might have said it was poor sportsmanship, but that's it.

The 2 bigger issues in my mind are that they lined up to take a knee ran a trick play and even worse, that the players defied what their coach told them to do. I mean their own coach was mad at them. I'm not really sure how people here can support that.

I’m saying the guys on the field made an executive decision on the final play of the final game of the season. I ain’t mad at it!

No one said anyone had to take a knee. It's a professional courtesy.

Running a play after pretending you're going to take a knee isn't competitive bravado, it's cheesy, chickenshit classless bush league garbage.

None of your analogies apply, bc none of those sports have anything similar.

Closest thing I can think of, is a dude tapping out in MMA, and the winning fighter pretending to lay off, but then taking another cheap shot b4 ref can stop fight.

Not trying to be over dramatic, but...it's pretty cheesy, and not at all analogous to RUTS.

Both teams failed to make the playoffs. Disappointment all around. If I were the fans, that’s what I would be pissed about. Not some meaningless TD.

They defied the called play and threw a HB pass for a TD so Rudy could get in the field.

    The precedent was set.
