Great effort today against Kentucky but I think we left several points on the floor due to missed free throws in the first half. I think I posted earlier in the year that free throws are going to come back to Byte this team. This is something they’ve got to get better at. Go gators!
Yup. I posted a similar thread, though a bit more harsh in tone. We earned the loss. Just awful free throw shooting.
Doesn't matter when we missed 11 and we actually shot 1 more than them, so we were much worse overall. They made 71%, we made 61%. Just think if we shot 72%, only 3 shots, which isn't even spectacular...we win.
I truly do not understand why college basketball players can't shoot free throws. Given all of the complexities of the game now, this seems like such an easy fix in comparison.
They need Canyon Barry to come back and teach them the underhand free throw shot. It’s not cool, but it sure is effective.
I agree, I see a trend, but it should be one of the easier things to fix in practice don’t you think?
As far as FT shooting, I’m not sure 3 or 4 year players are going to change so much. Samuel shoots the ball way too hard and long every time it seems. If I was coach, I’d bring Kugel or Richard or Pullin or Clayton over to show the rim clangers how to shoot free throws. Practice shooting the same way they do. Make at least 7 out of 10 at every practice; if you bang it off the backboard, start over. Shooting free throws is about shooting the correct way every single time. If they don’t get the technique correct, you are going to miss a bunch. Many on this board said we will lose games because of poor FT shooting - this was one.
Free throw shooting was a killer, no doubt. But we only made 1-11 3's in the 2nd half and the last 4-5 minutes we turned the ball over a lot. And numerous defensive lapses throughout the game gave KY easy layups or dunks. Overall, I think the Gators have a better team - they just didn't play like it today. And the really good teams find a way to win these games, especially at home.
Agree completely; our first half was pretty good and at halftime, we thought we were looking good. But UK outplayed us in the 2nd half and we self destructed. The dagger was that 3 point shot their tall guy hit past the top of the key. If we can play two halves like yesterday’s first half, we have the potential to be very good. UK is good and probably better than us at this time, but not by much.
We win by a comfortable margin because we don't put Reeves @90% on the line 8 times at the end of the game.
Reed Shepard yeah; that in bounds switch was pretty clever, we should look out for that in future games. But, if we can make a good % of our FT’s, we negate good FT shooting by the opponent. I’d rather win by us making shots than hoping our opponent misses shots.
Free throw shooting did not cost us this win as both teams shot just a hair below their avg. We lost this game in the paint, or due to it not being in the paint enough. Especially in the 2nd half. If you tell me that both teams shoot about their avg at the line and UF shoots better than UK from 3, and UK was only +2 in turnover margin, I would say we were going to win the game going away.
