I actually like old timey music, but the shit you posted sucks and is corny as hell. Its much worse than anything else posted on this thread. If you were going to go that route post some JP Sousa or something, at least some people still want to hear that in 2024 lol.
Is this a music critique thread? You and I are at least 30 years apart in age and from different cultural backgrounds. I’m not in here critiquing your music choices.
I understand and was not directing most of my comments at you I have another poster who started by critiquing my choices. I'm just pointing out to him when he says that some of the music at the beginning of the 20th century was terrible that in my opinion Rap music is much worse than anything Billy Murray or George M Cohen did. Sorry if I offended you, my comments were directed at wgbgator. He has a habit of criticizing folks he generally disagrees with but letting folks he usually agrees with go on the same issues.
I can't believe there are disagreements on a topic such as this. Oh wait, this is THFSG!! Should we really care about what music someone enjoys .... and whether or not they think it is a "protest song"?
Still relevant, though a little before "our time." "Howe took dead aim at slavery in her lyrics. She and her husband were strong anti-slavery activists, called abolitionists. Included in one verse of the hymn were the words 'let us die to make men free'—to fight to end slavery, in other words. Howe's new words also angered southerners."
I think "John Brown's Body" is more of a "protest" anthem than this classed-up version but I'll allow it since it's basically the same tune
Stunned it took to post #42 to get to that absolute classic. Winner! "The photo that changed America":
