What Are the Most Important Skills for a Head Coach?

    Most importantly, get the best players. Saban and Shart aren’t winning championships at Vandy.

    Okay dude.

    I will revise my position to “he was a hands on coach, but he was a special teams hands on coach, and that aspect of his role as head coach was not a focal point of his success with the Gators.” Happy?

    Im sure Kirby coaches the defense at Georgia, that doesn’t change the fact that he fits the CEO archetype more, which is the point I was making with Meyer.

    Take the “hands on” coaching away from Spurrier, Mullen, and Muschamp and almost all of their value is gone.

    His recruiting, staff hires, and culture were why Urban Meyer was successful at Florida, not because he coached special teams.

    The special teams was a really nice bonus and it definitely made us better, but if you were forced to take away one of the following from Urban Meyer's tenure in order to maintain the highest level of success, I think the answer is easy:
    1. Recruiting
    2. Staff Hires
    3. Culture/Motivation
    4. Hands on Coaching Special Teams.

    I'd get rid of Urban coaching Special Teams. That was just icing on the cake. If that was the cake itself, we win zero titles (and zero Heismans) in Gainesville between 2005 and 2010.

    You are right about Meyer delegating. He was a micromanager, but he let his coordinators do their thing, even letting Mullen throw the ball in the rain in Tallahassee.

    Meyer had a 'Plan to Win' every game and was a true CEO.
    He hired great coaches and they developed our players.
    He didn't micro-manage his coaches and let them work.
    CBN wants to control the entire offense all by himself.
    His strategy is a 'Not To Lose Big' approach if anything.
    He has no situational awareness nor 'feel for the game'.
    He hired the largest unqualified staff in school history.
    He doesn't understand Special Teams nor take it seriously.
    His time management skills & when to call TO's are piss poor.

    Agree with everything you said about Meyer and I can't argue right now with the Billy stuff, but I'm still hoping he turns it around. I genuinely think he understands what "needs" to happen. But turning vision into reality is easier said than done.

    I think the more tactical, lower level stuff like specific staff hires could be better, but this generally seems like a young staff. Hopefully they grow together.

    I think he can win championships here with the right roster even with mediocre to subpar game management. I think Kirby's far from the best in that department and look at how great Georgia is anyways.

    The rest can be fixed if he simply has the ability to identify the problem, the will to fix it, and the time to fix it considering that we're heading into what may be a make-or-break year for him. Setting up the program for success off the bat is pivotal because it's tough to make all of these changes going into year 3.

    This is it right here. The what and how changes every few years and so does the order of importance.

    I will say you undervalue SOS at FLORIDA even if he wasnt a offensive innovator in the 1990s. SOS was a winner, he always has been as a player and coach and held/elevated others to that standard. He himself said he wouldnt run himself into ground with prep like NS or others it wasnt his forte. Coaches like SOS bring out the best in their players and that swagger accounts for 1 score when you can back up the swagger on the field.

    He also had very good assistants another important checklist item for you. He wasnt afraid to change demote on field coaches for underperformance because he hated losing

    The ability to spot an AD who will be shown the door with you if you fail.

    Urbans plan to win was "every play" until the clock hit zero...winning the game was certain if he won every play and thats how he approached it.

    I like this comment, I think it emphasizes that there is a need for ego but with an ability to balance that with proper challenges to the way you are going about things. It takes an incredible ego to be a head coach, you have to believe in yourself and have an incredibly high level of confidence to do things in a way that won't make everybody happy. It can't be easy to balance that confidence with accepting logical challenges to one's philosophy. There's also the issue of trust in delegation vs. stepping in where a problem may appear to exist...again, not always an easy thing to tackle given you can't do everything as the head man.

    This topic actually is intriguing, and I wonder if it doesn't deserve more interest from GN! I agree recruiting ranks very high, but the evaluation of recruiting ranks highly as well! I personally believe the QB is the most important recruit to bring on board and BN got his QB this year. Every year the Gators should be pursuing the best talent, but the failing has mostly been at QB. I don't know who evaluates talent for the Gators, but some are blowing the evaluation of recruits; and it has been going on since the departure of UM. Obviously, BN has a decent eye for talent. Billy’s problem has mostly been bad luck, although he has also made some mistakes that have legitimately caused some to question if he is out of his league in the SEC. Was that the motivation of the OP? I can only speculate. I will say, though, I think BN is the coach the Gators need, and he needs a couple more years, if not three or four more. I will say this, BN is the best coaching hire since UM! Is he the guy who gets the Gators to the promise land? We will see.
