New League for the Top 40 - 60 Teams in College Football - My Version

Equal footing leads to level competition which equates to good games. So, yes, you are correct.

 

I've said this for years. Most of us root for the jersey and that's why college football is so attractive to TV, advertising, etc. Captive Audience.

 

In my scenario, 32 teams with 65 players each, that equals 2080 players.
You would think 99% of the top 300 HS recruits go to the SL schools. As well as a majority of the next top 600 players.

So a large chunk of the quality of players will be gone and you would be left with current 3/4 deep players as well as PWO's as your starters.

 

In my scenario you still would have the jersey. The players would still be student athletes, have to remain academically eligible, just with revenue sharing.

 

Not necessarily. We don't see a huge drop off, for instance, in college baseball from the minor leagues. There will still be guys very attracted by the college game and experience. Key here is you give people a choice vs. a hard road. I also think you'll still see a lot of guys from the second league make the pros based on sheer numbers. Further, given the enhanced predictability and fact most of these guys would stay for a longer term, the execution will be better or at least as good and, thus, entertaining. You might even see more innovation in the lower league like we used to in CFB in general.

Just a side note. I have friends in England who prefer the Championship to the PL in terms of the environment and general excitement. They still have a favorite PL team, but tend to attend local Championship games (or even lower league teams in their towns/neighborhoods). Thus, The Championship is a very viable league and fans of those who get "promoted" often lament going to the PL with the goal to just hang on rather than actually compete for things.

 

Maybe. But we don't see a split like that in baseball so no reason to think it would happen here. I do think you'd see a wealth split with the ones going to non SL schools because they can afford to select that option.

We have the same ideas but mine has less teams. He wants 64 teams.

 

You guys are so angry with the players for forcing a change to the postseason that was needed 30 years ago. They made the majority of bowls obsolete… and that’s a great thing for excitement and competition. Why wouldn’t you want to see more playoff games that count? What is accomplished by UGA beating FSU? Nothing. It should have been a playoff game. All our NY6 bowls in the post-Urban Meyer era should have been playoff games. Players have declared if it doesn’t count we’re not risking it… and they are right.

 

I think what you miss with your baseball comparison is the size of the team. 20 compared to 85. It's easier for a BB player to see the field than FB.

Also there is no media money in BB. And how many show up for a game? You might get 7,000 for a heavyweight match up but most games are a couple thousand so there really isn't any fan support.

Yeah, but isn't that countered by the inherent popularity of college football and all the things surrounding it? This league would be selling that, the tailgates, the school, the loyalty to school, etc. The experience of a college football weekend and rooting for guys who actually want to be there as opposed to forcing (via NFL rules) to be there. Are the days of 100M practice facilities probably over for those programs? Probably. Is that a bad thing?

 

But this is never happening. Just too large a country and too many players. It would be a fiasco, provided it could even pass legal muster (they'd need to form some kind of player's association I believe).

 

64 is still going to give you a bunch of have-nots at the bottom who stay there and exist for the bigger teams to pad their records. There's a reason 32 seems to work so well at the pro level. It's kind of the perfect number for this.

I guess they're already doing it to some degree, or using services to whittle it down to a manageable number. I still think it would be a fiasco, but who knows.

 

I just don't see how you do it. I guess you limit the rounds then let anyone left over sign wherever they want.

 

And what do you do if a player from the South doesn't want to play on the West Coast? Can he refuse? Play one year down and then transfer in to whomever he wants?
