I think candidates should be required to state their position on greed blacks signing up with General Sherman to massacre Plains Indians.

Reminds me of when a certain someone called Apple CEO Tim Cook “Tim Apple” and then double, triple and quadrupled down that he didn’t mispronounce it.

Because one gotcha query is as good as any ? Because history is murky ? Why ask why ?

Not all questions are similarly “gotcha-ey”. I have a history degree from UF. I wouldn’t generally describe history as murky. That’s too broad and lazy. Some history is less detailed than other history, but it really depends on the subject. There are different perspectives on a subject, but that isn’t the same as “murky”.

The question you posed isn’t similar to the Civil War question. Most people aren’t even familiar with that subject matter. Every viable American Presidential Candidate is aware of the Civil War and has a position on its origin. Because it has become popular to attempt to rewrite history, it is a relevant question that gives indicators in a candidate’s views on this and several other tangential topics.

I majored in history as well and I don’t think that anything I was taught is true or wholly true including the Civil War. Perhaps especially the Civil War.

What possesses a person to nail a candidate to the wall interrogating her about an event that transpired 163 years ago ? What is the motive ?

    Nailed to the wall?
    Interrogated?

I believe she was asked one simple question, Sir. It’s important for reasons I gave earlier.

Wait, didn’t you as much as admit that it was a gotcha question, while asserting no more “gotcha-y” than other possible questions ?

Very well then, I press my question: what was the motive ?

Neither, just pointing out some hypocrisy. Carry on.

A gotcha question isn’t nailing someone to the wall, nor is it an interrogation. I’m not going to keep repeating myself. I already said what I think are the motivations at least twice.

The motive was to show that Nikki cant answer a question directly because she is concerned about offending the deplorables.

I am not sure where you went to school but one of my undergraduate majors was in History at UF and much of the coursework was studying contemporary writing and competing assessments of movements and events. I am sad for you if your college experience was just like high school or relegated to all introductory overview classes where you were spoonfed dates and names. o_O

"Can't answer a question directly"... that's politics, and both sides do it.

True, although in the case of Nikki Haley's avoidance of using the word "slavery" in her initial reply to the question regarding the cause of the Civil War avoidance of answering the question directly reached the point of absurdity.

Yeah, my undergraduate History education at UF was outstanding. Critical thinking was required, as was deep knowledge of the course material. I didn’t want to come off as condescending, but the way he replied he does not come off as a History major graduate from UF. I wouldn’t describe myself as having “been taught” subjects by my history professors, because that implies a one-way flow of information. They didn’t just pass on facts and test me on dates and names. They challenged you on your positions and demanded excellent writing and grammar. You ultimately had to come to your own conclusions and defend them.

I did go back for an MBA, but subjectively my undergraduate History degree was far more difficult.
