UF is not the only SEC team with a Portal Issue

Since the end of the season, we have seen a few threads that referred to UF taking a big hit with the Transfer Portal. This morning I went to the 247 Sports Football Portal Tracker to see how the other SEC teams are doing with the Portal. Below is a chart of the current SEC football teams Portal record.

    • At this time, only one team (Bama) has not seen much Portal traffic. Now this could change when Bama ends their post season schedule
    • Only 3 teams have less than 10 players transfer out.
    • 12 teams have less than ten players transfer in.
    • 13 teams have 10 or more players transfer out.
    • Only 3 teams have more players transferring in versus transferring out.
    • UF does not lead in the number of players transferring in. Currently UF is in 3rd place.
    • UF is not in last place with the numbers of players transferring into their team. Texas Longhorns are in first with 3 players, UT, UGA, and UF are tied with 4 players each. Also, Bam and Missouri are tied with 5 players each.
    Conclusions:
    • UF has plenty of company in the SEC with having ten or more players transferring out.
    • UF has plenty of company in the SEC in not getting a lot of players transferring in.
    • It appears that Billy Napier is not a factor in the misery that UF has had with the Portal process. Please note, UF had misery with the Portal process before Napier came onto the scene.
    • It appears that the season records have little input on the Portal activity. Teams with more wins than loses are losing players too.
    • It appears that issues with the Portal are rooted in the process itself, the players, the NIL deals, and perhaps the NFL to a degree.
I have not looked that the other conferences. However, I would not be surprised if they experienced similar results too.

Didn't know we had four transfer in. Who are they?
It's kinda sad that the only team with more outgoing transfers lost its coach.

Correct and the team with one less won a couple of NCs and just gave the Noles the worst beatdown in Orange Bowl history. Quick, someone convince one of the portalers to stay!

Looks like we currently have the greatest net loss of players based on what you posted. I think we'll start bringing in some transfers soon though.

Thanks, but I don't know who these guys are. Is there a good site that is tracking the Gators' incoming transfers?

Did the other teams lose their best players on offense and defense?

On3 is a great site for this.
There's actually 5 now including JUCO transfer Taylor.

    WR Chimere Dike
Former Wisconsin receiver Chimere Dike announced that he’s transferring to Florida on signing day as a fifth-year senior. Dike is ranked as the No. 233 overall prospect in the On3 transfer portal player rankings.

In 2022, Dike had a breakout season at Wisconsin with Graham Mertz as his starting quarterback. He hauled in 47 passes for 689 yards and six touchdowns. Dike finished with 19 receptions in 2021 and 2023.

    DB Trikweze Bridges
Former Oregon defensive back Trikweze Bridges announced his pledge to Florida on Dec. 18. He’s ranked the No. 13 safety in the On3 Industry transfer portal player rankings and has two years of eligibility remaining. Primarily a corner for the Ducks, Bridges told Gators Online’s Keith Niebuhr he’s going to Florida to play safety.

Bridges started 13 games at cornerback in 2022, recording a career-high 49 tackles with three interceptions, five pass breakups and a forced fumble. Last season, he played in a backup role and had 16 tackles and three pass breakups.

    DL Joey Slackman
Former Penn defensive lineman Joey Slackman announced his commitment to Florida on Dec. 17. He is ranked the No. 2 defensive tackle and No. 16 overall prospect in the On3 Industry transfer portal player rankings.

Slackman was the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, registering 50 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss, 4 sacks and a pass breakup. His 90.1 overall Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade led all FCS defensive tackles, as did his 92.8 run-defense rating.

    OL Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Former San Diego State offensive lineman Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson committed to the Gators at the conclusion of his official visit, becoming their first addition from the portal. He’s ranked the No. 10 offensive tackle in the On3 Industry transfer portal player rankings.

Crenshaw-Dickson was a three-year starter for the Aztecs. With that program, he started multiple games at both left and right tackle. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

    DL Brien Taylor Jr.
The 6-foot-6, 270-pound Taylor, a native of Houston, Texas, is considered the No. 3 defensive lineman and No. 9 overall prospect by the 247Sports composite JUCO prospect rankings for the class of 2024. He accumulated 39 total tackles, two sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in 13 appearances with Blinn College.

By the way, Slackman is the prize of the transfers so far.

    Ranking college football transfers:
Best 75 players in portal (ESPN)

    10. Joey Slackman, DT
Transferring to: Florida | Transferring from: Pennsylvania

    HT: 6-4 | WT: 300 | Class: Senior

Background: Slackman was an honorable mention All-Ivy selection after the 2022 season, as he had 49 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
He did much of the same in 2023 with 50 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 4 sacks as a team captain.

How he fits at Florida: The Florida coaches needed help on defense, whether through the portal or recruiting, and Slackman gives the staff immediate help. The Gators ranked No. 70 in total yards allowed per game this past season, so Slackman was a priority because of his versatility. He can help get to the quarterback or stuff the run and should be an impact player for Florida in 2024.

  13. Losing players to the portal is only bad if Napier fails to upgrade the talent. The Gators do not have a lot of players rated above 80 in PFF grades, which is why losing Etienne hurts. Losing Princely Umanmilien and Jaydon Hill somewhat hurts because of the combination of skill and veteran presence, but they are replaceable in the portal. Granted, if Napier does not grab 5 good players in the portal then these losses will hurt a bit more.

    • RB Trevor Etienne 2022 0.9261 81.3 PFF Georgia
    • OL Micah Mazzcua 2020 0.8608 78.5 PFF Baylor
    • DL Princely Umanmielen 2020 0.9117 76.3 PFF Ole Miss
    • STAR Jaydon Hill 2019 0.9019 ~63 PFF
    • DT Chris McClellan 2022 0.9536 63.7 PFF Missouri
    • RG Jalen Farmer 2022 0.873 761.7 PFF
    • WR Caleb Douglas 2022 0.8859 59.7 PFF Texas Tech
    • DT Will Norman 2023 0.9244 57.4 PFF
    • WR Thai Chiaokhiao-Bowman 2020 0.8500 56.4 PFF
    • OT Jordan Herman 2022 0.7500 56.1 PFF Charlotte
    • S Kamari Wilson 2022 0.9807 55.8 PFF Arizona State
    • CB Jadarrius Perkins 2021 0.8904 48.9 PFF Toledo
    • TE Jonathan Odom 2020 0.8633 48.1 PFF Eastern Michigan
    • LB Scooby Williams 2021 0.9671 ~47 PFF
    • QB Max Brown 2022 0.8374 37.1 PFF Charlotte
    • RB Carlson Joseph 2021 0.7500 NR
    • TE Andrew Savaiinaea 2022 0.8741 NR
    • DT Keenan Landry 2022 0.7500 walk-on
    • K Adam Mihalek 2022 0.7500 former walk-on
Joey Slackman has a PFF of 90.1, which is a definite upgrade over Princely Umanmilien in a slightly different DL/DT role.

Trikweze Bridges is a slight upgrade over Jaydon Hill in a slightly different position (STAR vs CB/S convert).

Brendan Crenshaw-Dickson is an upgrade over Micah Mazzcuah, unless we are looking for an OL good at old fashioned fisticuffs.

Brien Taylor has the size and skills to be an improvement on the DL.

I haven't looked but how many of UGAs players that declared free agency barely scraped the 2 deep vs were starters/expected starters or shared duties such as Etienne?

idk if PFF grades actually reflect quality but at least it's a data point. Will be interesting to look at this when the roster is finalized.

Quite a bit of talent that would probably equate to a top 3-5 class.

He didn't have the passing accuracy of Mertz at only 57% in 2023, but he's still a running threat.
    2,638 yards, 21 TD's and 7 INT's isn't horrible.
He's also rushed for more than 1100 yards in 3+ years.
