That has NOTHING to do with the main point of the OP, but I am fine with the ruling. Now please let us know how you can support a person who had no respect for free speech and the constitutional rights of Americans.

Biden may make racial GAFFES, but too many Republicans PURPOSELY spew vile, racial venom. There's a BIG difference! And Nikki's response shows her to be a first-class panderer, plus it shows undeserved respect for racist voters, and her extreme desire to cater to them.

    Now please answer my question.

I don’t think you are totally wrong. I do think she fell for the trap, and I think her waffling was probably intentional. She has been intentionally squishy in dealing with MAGA types and southern conservatives. Yes she is probably being held to a higher standard than Biden would be although I don’t know specifically what he said that you are referring to.

What kills me is Trump says atrocious stuff and multiple lies every day, and it is now just accepted and Haley does this and it is a big deal.

It's a false equivalence. Colorado punished the baker for not following an anti-discrimination law. Certainly, there are complicated cases where you have anti-discrimination laws butting up against free speech. And one of those examples indeed could feature that baker (if the facts of that case weren't so bad for the baker). Your attempt to reduce this sort of complex issue to a "gotcha" is pretty weak.

I imagine we'd all agree that free speech shouldn't protect your right to put a sign in your front window saying, "Whites only," when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits that. Right? The question thus becomes where the line is when weighing competing societal values of great importance (equality vs. free expression). It is quite different from the sort of brazen attacks on free speech DeSantis has launched, particularly because those attacks were often aimed at undermining both equality and free expression.

It's only a "trap" in the sense that she whiffed on an easy question because she wanted to pander to racists, just like she has in the past on the same exact issue.

I agree it's absurd what Trump gets away with. But you'll need to talk to his fans about that. They don't seem to care.

I thought you first lumped all blacks together when you called out pubs…no?
You said republicans won’t get your vote because they really piss off blacks.

Yeah, she wants the votes of about 10 people.
    You really got her.

Obviously, Haley was not expecting a question about the Civil War to come up during a campaign. Mostly likely, she had a minor brain freeze, and then the issue of how some southern white people would react to the answer "slavery" caused her to make a poor decision in how she answered. The best way to answer, if she wanted an answer that was both accurate and satisfied (almost) all people, would be to say:

"The simple answer is slavery. The complete answer is more complicated than that, but is still based on the economics and politics of slavery. The South was in no immediate danger of ending the practice of slavery, but by allowing the western states to not be open to slavery, the balance of North vs South in Congress would have tilted toward the North on the issue of slavery in the future. The economics of slavery meant that wealthy Southerners would suddenly be poor if they had to hire people to plant and harvest their crops. Then a certain amount of arrogance on both sides led each side to believe that they would win a war in a matter of months."

Surprisingly, people in the South believed that England was so desperate for their cotton that they would not only break a naval blockade of the U.S. on the southern states and supply them with war materiel, but that England would fight in the war on their side. They didn't know that (1) England did not want to get into a fight for cotton; (2) England was starting to get cotton from other places (India and Egypt, I believe); and (3) cotton prices were low in 1860, and England bought more cotton than they needed, filling up warehouses with it. If Southerners would have just gotten on the internet, they would have known all that.

I just got back from vacation, and haven’t read the whole thread. But what makes the entire thread so cool to me is that both the left and Trumpeteers are now focusing attacks on Haley. That means that she is truly gaining momentum. Thank goodness, given the alternatives.

If it wasn't obvious Nikki was afraid of alienating believers in the "Lost Cause" version of history, a description which almost certainly applies to a majority of members of MAGA nation in the South. According to them the Civil War or as they frequently refer to the conflict as the War Between the States was fought over "states' rights" rather than slavery, she just got a little too cute trying to avoid the loaded term states rights while indirectly echoing that narrative.

I don’t think this needed to be explained, but Republican policies and talking points tend to alienate blacks of all different heritages. I wasn’t just lumping all black people together to stereotype us. The point is that I think that the Republicans could get a lot more black voters that traditionally vote Democrat if they made a few simple tweaks that wouldn’t even fundamentally change their core platform.

My comment about the guy lumping blacks into one category is that he accused me of defining myself by the heritage of my skin. He didn’t even think to ask himself what the heritage of my skin was. He just assumed I was a descendant of Black American slaves, which I am not.

Thats the point. All sides try and silence those they disagree with... Thats why I mention the baker.

Very few people believe in letting the otherside speak freely.

So it is my belief that you can't vote for anyone who has a perfect stance on free speech.

    Classic Biden “makes a gaffe”.

    Pubs “do it on purpose”.

    The cognitive dissonance is amazing.
