DC business owner warns of 'out of control' prices and crime after 52 restaurants shut down (msn.com)

The nation's capital is grappling with an escalating crime surge, having surpassed a 20-year record-high in homicides with 261 murders as of Dec. 14, according to Metropolitan Police Department data. Robberies are also skyrocketing, increasing 69% year-to-date, while theft is up 24%.

Additionally, motor vehicle theft is up 84% and violent crime increased 39% year-over-year.

"We had an American Red Cross van that was supposed to feed the homeless the other day get carjacked. I mean, it's out of control," he said.

It's amazing how bad DC has become. The only thing about DC libs want to talk about is Jan 6th since they feel they can blame that on our former President.

Local problem. Nationwide crime is down. Just like a blizzard in Texas doesn’t mean there is a cooling trend. I noticed your article and commentary was bereft of solutions.

Killings in the U.S. are dropping at a historic rate. Will anyone notice?

The FBI data, which the bureau compiled from reports filed by 18,888 local police departments, lags nearly a year behind reality. Asher, who puts together data from departments that cover a large majority of the nation’s population, says that so far this year, homicides nationwide have declined 11% to 12%.

Cities tend to report first and have larger drops than more-rural areas, Asher noted, so he’s projecting the final, nationwide 2023 numbers will show a smaller drop — somewhere between 7% and 10%.

“A 10% decline would be the largest ever recorded,” he said.

The decline goes beyond homicides: Violent crime overall ticked down in 2022 across the country, the FBI numbers showed, returning the U.S. pretty much to the level of 2019, before the COVID-19-era increase.

We are generally safer than we've ever been. Technology let's us know of every Tom, Dick, Harry, Jose' and Gertrude that get shot, sliced or otherwise injured; so, we perceive things as worse. Fear America - it's not a slogan for our adversaries it's our current culture.

While DC does indeed have a crime problem for a little context 60% of restaurants fail in their first year and 80% of restaurants fail within five years. The chances are that most of the 52 restaurants closed as the result of normal attrition in an industry with a very high rate of failure. Even if DC's crime rate declined most of the restaurants that closed would most likely have failed anyway.

So on an interesting & important article about DC crime - the big takeaway? Trump is the victim. Yeah it’s the libs that are obsessed by Dear Leader.

really? I’m curious what you base that on. I live in the area and spend plenty of time throughout the DC area, and interact regularly with folks from all over the DMV. Most of the folks I know, across the political and socioeconomic spectrums, are very conscious of the uptick in certain crimes and very concerned about it. So I’m kind of curious what groups of DC folks you interact regularly with.

My family lives around there. I just visited. The good parts of town are still fine but the bad parts are baaaaaaaad. That’s the scuttlebutt around the dc suburbs.

I think we’re going to see a lot more demonstrative “tough on crime” actions from the DC gov in the near future. The potential Wizards and Caps move to NoVa has them playing defense and damage control

Not much reason to go to DC. Traffic sucks and expensive tickets from those speed cameras.

DC is awesome, IMO. You have your typical big city entertainment like sports or nightlife plus all the historical and educational stuff. Love every minute I am there. You can’t exhaust the possibilities.

Getting to and out SUCKS. And even though lots of cool things are “free”, not really. Parking alone will run your bill up fast. Finding a free spot is basically like hitting the lottery.

The Metro is an affordable solution but adds hours to a trip.

Seems like you could exhaust the historical stuff. I prefer NOVA over DC

I mean I myself am in NOVA. And that’s where I spend 99% of time. You have some Udvar-Hazy or Wolf Trap and such. I like it. Just not DC.

Lol, motor vehicle theft is up 84% and violent crime increased 39% year-over-year. Yes this is part of the reason why restaurants are closing.

If a friend or known person is murdered, raped or has some other incident perpetrated against them it's horrible. Certainly a growth rate of 39% for violent crime is concerning. Then, you look at the statistics going back to 1960: District of Columbia 1960 to 2019

Look at the early 1990's when the population was around 600,000 and there were over 400 murders per year. Yikes!
So, now the population is about 700,000 and the media is screaming about going over 200 murders in 2023. Again, as I posted earlier in this thread, we are generally more safe today than in the last 60 years but the way everything is portrayed in the media it appears to be horrific. Fear on America!
