After a white man killed black folks in her state, Haley wasted no time in removing vestiges of the South from the public square …

    Par for what course?
She was outspoken and condemned Trumps handling of Charlottesville.

She pulled the flag off the SC capitol.

She has historically polled very well with minorities, especially for a republican.

She talked about slavery without mentioning the word. Its sorta a gotcha and its being blown up a lot.

I mean are we just going to now forget what Biden has said about African Americans? Remember when he asked a black reporter if he was a "Junkie"? Or when he called a KKK leader his "mentor"?

Imagine if Haley had done THAT.

Lets stop all the gotcha stuff.

That's assuming you define 'Southern' as being limited to white conservatives.

But otherwise, I think you're right. She was willing to distort the truth in order to please what she considers her core audience.
And, you're also right in saying that wasn't a good idea.

I’m sure we’re all the better for gotcha journalism.

Why can’t journalists ask fresh new questions like “Do you believe it was a good thing that The Hundred Years War came to an end or do you believe they should have kept it going ?”

If I was asked what caused the Civil War, I would have said that I've seen "Gone with the Wind," and the cause of the war was not just slavery (did Mammy have it so bad?), but the fact that the South was so full of spoiled brats like Scarlett O'Hara.

Are people this petty and stupid that this kind of thing actually makes a difference? These political gotchas for both parties are just meant to stir up controversy in the weak minded. I’m no Haley fan but this is ridiculous.

True, but the flag removal was approved by the legislature, right? Not her sole decision.

No, she very specifically didn't talk about slavery.
No, Biden didn't ask a black reporter if he was a junkie.
He called Byrd his mentor after Byrd renounced his KKK days

It wasn't a difficult question. The only reason some people are claiming it was a 'gotcha' is because she screwed it up.

She pulled the flag during her second term as governor when she wasn't going to be running for reelection and wasn't worried about appeasing the Palmetto Patriots or otherwise offending those fine gentlemen. It wasn't like she finally grew a spine, she was simply no longer worried about the consequences. I applaud her for finally doing the right thing, but let's keep it in context.

When she announced her candidacy for president, she selected John Hagee to give the invocation. Hagee endorsed George Wallace for president, founded and organized the Wallace Youth and is both anti-Catholic (Hitler "was a spiritual leader in the Catholic Church") and anti-Semitic (Holocaust was due to the Jewish people's disobedience of God.) Dial in healthy doses of being a Homophobe and Islamophobe for good measure. John McCain rejected Hagee's endorsement in 2008 calling his comments "...deeply offensive and indefensible."

She polls well with minorities in part because she is a member of a minority group. As they get to know her, they will like her less.

She may have condemned Trump's handling of Charlottesville, but is damn sure to not too strongly condemn him now. Kind of like the slavery thing. As Gator715 even observed, she doesn't want to alienate people who will vote for her. And just who, exactly, are the people alienated by calling out slavery and saying what caused the Civil War?

So yeah, par for the course....just in a more attractive, better spoken package.

She did? When she worked for him, here is what she said. How many years did it take her to "condemn" his handling of Charlottesville?

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley had 'private conversation' with Trump after Charlottesville

    She did that.

Yes, she polls "very well" with minorities. She received support from...12% of African-Americans in the last poll (which, actually overestimated the vote share that she would receive). Huge numbers.

That is a heck of a lot of spin. There is a reason she talked around it without saying the word. And this isn't the first time. When she first ran, she framed the Civil War as a choice between "tradition" and "change."

Nikki Haley should henceforth be known as Neki Hoeky. There were two boys in the Dick Tracy comic strip back in the 50s named Neki and Hokey, and they would often shout their names "Neki Hokey!" This inspired a hit song in the 60s with the misspelling title "Niki Hoeky." Thus two nonsensical words that inspired a mostly nonsensical song should now apply to a politician talking nonsense to avoid offending "the base," and who wants to be vice president with Mr. Nonsense himself.

Wow. Leaving out a lot of what she said about Charlottesville.

    Her quotes:
"We must denounce them at every turn, and make them feel like they are on an island and isolate them the same way they wish to isolate others."
    --------
IRT Trumps comments she is quoted in her memoir as “deeply disturbed” by Trump claiming that there were “very fine people” on both sides...
“A leader’s words matter in these situations. And the president’s words had been hurtful and dangerous,”

As for polling she has polled as high as 44% with AA's in job approval which is unheard of for a republican.

She can write one thing and (not) say another. Commiting something to print is of course different from evasions in town hall meetings. How many people have read or are going to read her memoir? How many members of "the base" read at all? They get all they need to know from FoxNews and Newsmax, or (if they do read) from Truth Social. She can be high and mighty in her memoir and how many MAGAts are going to know it?

I was quoting a politico piece. One of many that have quoted her as ripping Trump.
Nikki Haley says she stands by her prior condemnation of Trump on Charlottesville

You should research what she has said. Including at the RNC about... Slavery.

Yeah, that's a real tough subject to cover, ain't it? She's said it before but sometimes she just can't say the word. "Let's see now, what is it? It starts with an s...."

I mean she said it clearly at the RNC... And clearly described it this time.

But sure lets reelect the guy with the long history of real racial "gaffes".
