    Set up question.

Why ask about the civil war?

Seems awful random. Or rather, planned.

The problem wasn’t the question. It was her answer

Secession may have been out slavery for South Carolina. But the war wasn’t about slavery for Lincoln.

Her answer is problematic to you.

The question is problematic to me.

What in sam hill does the cause of the @!##@$ civil war have to do with any damn thing at all today???

Just a stupid neo-prog talking point bullshit issue to get the enlighned northern libbies all lathered up about CW issues they ejaculate to on line and in classrooms....

no one had to get lathered up or ejaculate. the questioner might have been genuinely curious how a Southern governor would answer the question. she just had to answer the question intelligently.
    but she didn't.

And let's not pretend she did anything other than put a rightwing spin on it.

The question was the CAUSE. Lincoln's focus on preserving the Union, i.e., opposing a region which threatened to destroy it in order to preserve slavery, was by no stretch of just about anyone's imagination save yours a CAUSE of the War, which was waged because the South fired the first shots.

During a Wednesday town hall in Berlin, New Hampshire, a voter asked Haley, “What was the cause of the United States Civil War?”

“Well, don’t come with an easy question or anything," Haley responded. "I mean, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how the government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do.”

    ===========

She didn't use the actual word SLAVERY........that's what's at issue here?

Wow.........she MUST be STUPID or a RACIST......or maybe even BOTH! o_O

Good point. That struck me as well. I thought when I read it she was being too subtle, too academic. On the other hand, it was pretty obvious what the questioner meant and what answer he baited - yes, baited - her into giving. She certainly obliged, which also suggests she's not too quick on her feet.

BTW, slavery was 100% the CAUSE of the War.

I ran into Winn Dixie this afternoon after my doctor appointment to grab a few things and I can guarantee you....no one in that store was thinking about the frickin' civil war. They were thinking about how crazy high food costs have become.

    Talk about a disconnect........

We've unfortunately drifted back to a society where the racists have taken off their hoods and are now just openly spouting off their crap on Twitter, trying to sway more people to their side. Trying to normalize racism in America, again. There are people trying to fight it. The problem that republicans face is that these openly racists people and all the closet racists that follow them are nearly 100% republicans and make up a significant block. While I don't think Haley or even Trump are full blown KKK/Nazi wanabees, there is no doubt in my mind that they are trying to thread to needle of being highly appealing to Nazis without putting on their own hood and giving a Hitler salute.

That's why failing simple questions like this is important. It tells the people fighting racism that Haley is not an ally and never will be.

Nikki Haley did use a school shooting to take down the stars and bars from the capital building. I think that was a positive. I keep liking what republicans do any moments but hate their whole gestalt.

It's also to force her to choose between alienating some of the people who vote for her, and looking afraid to tell the truth.

    It's a gotcha question.

A lot of Southerners apparently believe the Civil War was about state's rights, which was part of it. But the elephant in the room was slavery. I don't necessarily disagree with the "state's rights" claim, but I believe it was a secondary issue. The primary issue was that the South wanted to have the flexibility to allow slavery. They could do this if it was a state issue, they couldn't if it was a federal issue as evidenced by the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments that came after the war. States rights are important, but I don't think wars are typically fought over disagreements on procedure and process, which is essentially what a claim on state's rights is.

Context needs to be considered when it comes to the Southern economy and slavery. It's not like everyone in the North was egalitarian during the Civil War. But refocusing on state's rights looks more like deflection to me than an honest look at what happened. Nobody wants to see themselves as descendants of people who fought for the side trying to keep slavery, so they naturally reframe the issue as a way of defending their family's reputation.

Just the way I see it. But nobody should feel the need to apologize for the sins of their father, let alone their ancestors. We go back far enough, I'm sure everyone has someone down their blood line who did some pretty evil things. And it doesn't mean everything from the South during that period should be condemned. Individuals often-times are more complicated than Black and White, good and evil. But that doesn't change the fact that the Confederacy was wrong.
