"Ole miss had a decent team". "Not much better than we were" Now that's pretty funny since they went 10-2 and we were 5-7. I'll take 10-2 in a heartbeat. They were the third best team in the SEC I get it, you're obviously not a Kiffin fan but you're in serious denial when it comes to ole miss' record. As for fsu, even with Travis they wouldn't beat any of the current top 4 imo.
It's funny, but also not a joke. At some point everyone is going to say "why bother?" Or at the very least say "what makes this farce of a 'bowl' better than that actually exciting game between those two FCS teams I never heard of before that I accidentally watched back on December 10th?" Maybe that should have been the marquee game.
The same FSU fans saying "It shouldn't matter that our QB was injured, we shouldn't be penalized by the committee!" Will be the same ones saying "We didn't have all our guys!" After the Georgia game.
This is a result of the playoff setup and it won't be any better when it goes to 12 teams. And I would think that NIL has made the "quaint" gifts the players get to play in the game to be superficial. But make no mistake, the bowls are no longer about getting fans to go to cities and spend money, it is ALL about TV revenue and sponsors selling stuff. Mexico Avocados? In Orlando???
True, but if people do not tune in then there will be no TV revenue and sponsors will put their ad dollars elsewhere. This could all come crashing down, and quite suddenly.
I guess ultimately bowl games could be an honest to goodness reward for the non starters to get into and play the majority of a game but the question will be whether the TV revenue will remain strong.
Bowl games outside the CFP might become glorified spring games except against different opponents, but I don’t think the revenue will take a huge hit. Bowl games are in that sweet spot during the year where there isn’t much going on. You throw a game on in the background with family in town. Hypothetically, you’re watching Ohio St’s backups play Tennessee’s backups trying to guess what those teams will look like next season. I don’t see the system crashing as much as I see the fans looking at these games differently with different expectations.
What could be wrong with a system that has such scintillating bowls as the "Tax Act" bowl, the "Bad Boys Mowers" bowl, the "Dukes Mayo" bowl, and last, but most certainly not least, the "Pop-Tart" bowl?
I think you are exactly right. I will still watch the bowl games but I will be looking more at what talent does a team have coming up rather than hey this is the FSU team that finished undefeated. Speaking of which, I told all my buddies to pound the line when it came out at 12 and a half. It's 17 and 1/2 now and I think that probably takes into account pity on Georgias part
The ones that are just the company name do annoy me. “Guaranteed Rate Bowl” at least call it the Motor City Bowl or Dried Up Car Lot Bowl and throw your company name in front. Have some respect for what bowl games used to be.
Because some of us are college football fans that enjoy watching other teams. And some like myself despise teams like UGA, FSU, Miami, etc. and enjoy watching them lose.
Agreed. The bowls started losing their status when every 6 win team started getting invites, we had almost 50 bowls at one point. We had so many bowls they had to find ways to get 5 win teams in to fill slots, “good GPA, come on in. Take your place in the Carfax Bowl.” Bowl game status has been dying a slow death for a long time.
Imagine this coming: Let's say Ohio State and Michigan are both 10-1 going into last game of season. OSU is ranked #4 with a 1 point loss on a very controversial bad call vs 9-2 Penn State, on the road and in a snow storm. Michigan opened the season vs #1 Texas on the road and lost by 1 point on a missed FG that looked good at the end. Michigan is ranked #3. 3 vs 4. Playoffs and Big 10 title game coming up. Whoever loses will still be in top 12 and wont have to play in Big 10 champ game. So why bother, aside from pride? 2023 Season, reality. Texas in playoffs. Opening game Tex vs Washington. Texas QB Ewers goes down with ankle sprain in first qrt with 10-0 lead. Back up Murphy has entered portal and not on team. Texas offense sputters with true fr at QB who throws 2 picks and Washington wins 21-16. Great huh! Let's take a step back to 1996 season. UF lost to fsu on road. UF beat Bama for SEC title. Ike, Reidel, Danny, and Lawrence Wright opt out of Sugar Bowl to prep for NFL. Then OSU beats Az St, and suddenly the Sugar Bowl is for the Nat'l Championship. Do we win?
