Craig Fitzgerald for S&C (NY Giants)

And color me unsurprised that said neg head offers no other candidate that he thinks would be better. Were you to ask him which S&C coach is better, and available, all you would hear is crickets, and more crickets.

 

And chaos got a new job in 4 seconds with a well-respected defensive coach and Sale at one point was considered one of the best OL coaches in the country at a previous stop. If this hire happens this is a very good addition to the staff.

 

Fitz is a winner. I wish Beamer would have went after him… dude was our best S&C we had here.

I will say he doesn’t tend to stay long wherever he goes.

 

Any insight or opinion why he moves around so much?

 

Riiiiight. Because S&C is the problem with the NY Giants. It can't be the fact that their roster is completely devoid of talent and Danny DeVito is their starting QB.

So who do you think we should have hired, and why are they a better option than Fitzgerald? Wait, never mind, don't even bother answering. I bet you can't name a single S&C coach in the NFL or at any college.

 

Fits has a reputation as a hired gun. I don’t mean that in a bad way. He comes into a program and gets the S and C up to par.. are it I. The right track and gets everyone bought in. After 3-4 years .. he moves in.
Why? I don’t know. My best guess is he is a pain in the butt and gets tired of running everyone the wrong way. But being a pita may be why he is so successful turning anemic SC programs around.
Again.. this is all speculation in my part. No inside I do. No first hand knowledge.

 

S&C director has to be a non stop, ultra high energy occupation. Could be Fitzgerald gets burned out after a time and has to move on as part of a recharge.
If he is here 3 or 4 years he will have time to do some good: as long as he doesn’t burn bridges when he departs. He doesn’t sound like the type person to do that.

 

A couple years ago the Georgia S&C coach would have come if asked...I had that conversation with him over dinner... I doubt that would be the case with BN being a question mark after this season. Also the Georgia S&C coach is one of the highest paid in NCAAF..if not the highest. Hopefully FItz whips our players into guys that look like Ronnie Coleman after the 5th Olympia title...Im tired of watching our guys get pushed around by players 100 lbs lighter.

100% true. I really like this guy and am thinking kids will look at his NFL experience as a huge plus. I mean should give him immediate cred.

 

Thanks for the input. I’d take 3-4 years and then he turns it over to one of the guys he’s developed by that time.

 

Some people on this board aren't happy unless they're complaining. And some wonder why Spurrier left. Sure, he had the NFL itch, but there wasn't bitching and complaining about 10 wins, he probably would have retired here with a couple of more nattys.

 

Well, somebody high up, like Napier or the UAA, should have a Plan B. That plan would be to have Fitzgerald mentor someone (or more) to a his backup or even replacement.
When Fitzgerald decides to get happy feet, The HBC and the UAA may not have to search far and wide.

RE this hire: I'm happy for all those who like it - even though no one seems to know much about this guy or how it was that CBN chose him over other candidates, or even if there were other candidates.

Again, my concern is with UF's hiring process. Hocke was CBN's guy. Suddenly, the guy who was good enough for him for the past 6 years isn't good enough anymore? There are lots of ways one can interpret that.

I just find it ironic that so many call for more coaching stability in the football program, but that only seems to apply to the head guy. To me, UF has the appearance of that old saw about what happens during the decline of a coaching tenure: 1) blame the previous guy, 2) then if things don't get better the next year, fire the assistants.

Time will tell. Feel free to flame away.

 

That sounds reasonable to me.

 

Historically, CEO’s have a shelf life. Stable companies have hired an developed well for the transition and stability. The coaching model doesn’t seem to support any of that.

time will tell, but effective managers always try and hire folks more talented than they are. Let the ego go and look for the best fit. Right now we are the 2am fat dude looking for a quality hook up, haha, makes everything tougher.

 

That's a fair response, and I agree with a lot of your points. But like you said, nobody knows much about this guy....nor do they know much about ANY S&C coach. So why is anyone badmouthing the hire? Some were complaining about the new DB coach too....."Oh he came from the NFL? The Chargers? Their defense sucks, so he must be a bad coach!" It's just such a lazy conclusion.

Napier is making changes wherever he sees fit. Results over loyalty. I'll take that over sticking with your guys just because you don't wanna fire your buddies. And I know from what I've seen on the field that our S&C program needs improvement. None of us know if there were better candidates available, because we don't even know who was available and we don't know much about any S&C coach beyond five minutes on google. Maybe this guy will be great, maybe not. Like you said, time will tell.
