Would this item be an acceptable Guardrail: Since almost all of us agree that college football is a big business, how about having the NCAA and the schools add a non compete clause to the signing of a scholarship and or NIL? The Athletic Admins in these colleges spend a lot of money on coaches, recruiting, and infrastructure. To protect their investments, they need a non compete clause on the athletic scholarships. These con compete clauses could be anywhere from 1 to 5 years. This is not a cure all remedy. At least it is a start.
So just abandon all pretense of the student athlete and going to the university of your choice? Obviously this would be unwieldy with 100+ teams. Impossible even when you think of all the moving parts. I guess if you shrink down to 32 team super league theoretically it’s the size of the NFL, but college classes are 25/year with kids leaving every 3-5 years max. There’s no 10 or 15 year college careers (yet, lol). With 85 man rosters, what, we are going to have a 25 round draft???
If there are no rules placed on this NIL bidding, the price tags on players will continue to grow, then soon those schools with smaller alumni, or athletic budgets won't be able to afford to continuously donate money to pay the players since the boosters don't really get any ROI on pay for play as a business would with an endorsement/(real)NIL deals would bring. Companies pay big bucks to athletes to use their names and inage to sell their shoes, clothes, sodas etc. Which they hope will bring them great return on sales. What do those who donate to collectives get in exchange for pay for pay for play deals? Somethings got to give so long as the universities are still keeping all the money and making the fans and boosters foot the bill for creating the team. I've read several.articles where they've mentioned the demise of smaller athletic departments in regards to this NIL era. I hope not for the 1000's of kids sake.
Its a small percentage of schools that make money on sports/football. The smaller schools will just draw from a different set of players or abandon the sport. Or just let booster’s handle it The student athlete premise has been dead in big time football for a while. Just keep admission standards the same for all.
They won't shutter. They will just play each other like they do now. Some may drop a division but most will continue on. The Sunbelt, conference USA, the Mountain West etc. If D2, D3 can play football, so can they. There are 162 D 2 schools that play football. They do it on small budgets and no frills. There 243 D3 schools that play football.
It would never pass the courts. Most non competes are being gutted. As far as the investments. That is on them as an expense to attract top talent. No one is forcing them to spend on coaches and facilities.
If only 32 schools are going to pay the big bucks, then it isn't any different than today. Right now, the big schools are getting the more highly regarded players and the rest are getting the leftovers. With 25 scholarships available , that means 800 recruits to the bigger programs and every other program gets what's left. No different than what's currently happening. Those kids who don't get the big school paydays are still going to have plenty of opportunities. Unless the bigger programs are only going to play teams in the 32 team league, they're still going to have to play some of the smaller programs. If that's the case, the smaller programs can create an alliance with a minimum payment for one of their teams to play a big time program. At that point, they could demand larger paydays than they currently get. In fact, this might actually help the lesser programs to finance their athletic departments, recruiting, and ability to pay higher NILs.
Nah. The new league of 32 only play each other, that's the draw. Play off level football every weekend. The remaining schools can develop their own playoff and championship just like FCS, D2 and D3. Your math is off. 25 scollies a year. 85 per team. That's 2750 players on scholarship for a 32 team league.
Math wasn't off, and you knew that I meant per year. It's 800 per year leaving the same amount as before for the smaller programs. As far as the number of games 32 teams could play in a season, it would be hard for 32 teams to accomplish that over a twelve game season. Just think what a pain it was for the SEC to create an 8 game schedule for next season with half the number of teams. NFL teams have to play the teams in their own divisions twice for it to happen and they have a 17 game season.
No I didn't know what you meant. I went off what you typed. NFL plays twice in their own division purposely not because they have to. The new 17 game schedule changed it a little bit. A 32 team league playing 12 games. 2 16 team conferences. 4 - 8 team division. 7 games in your division and 5 coming from the 3 remaining divisions. It can be done without repeat games during regular season.
32 X 25 signees which is technically the maximum they are supposed to give out each year equals 800. I assumed that you were capable of tacitly understanding what I meant. My bad.
I politely differ with you one one point. More than one is forcing them to spend on coaches and facilities. One group that I can name are the deep pocket donners. However, I do agree that no one is putting a gun to their heads. Also, I did have a non compete clause, but that was thirty years ago before things got upside down.
There’s a lot of truth to everything you said. I’m all for players but the same teams are still recruiting at the top and the bought players will still win. The main difference is that teams can’t keep the 3-4 deep, they move to lesser teams.
The cap isn’t as much of a problem. Think mlb vs nfl. Yrs it sucks that in baseball, there’s no cap and the big markets buy all the talent but there are at least contracts. Players can’t just move without compensation. With only four years of eligibility, a player like ETN could either honor the contract or sit. Or maybe someone would trade us a lineba for him. It’s better than what we have.
I’m. Or talking nil contracts, they need to make the players employees and get contracts with the team. Or at least pay to play which is already what we have. They have buyouts on coaches, put em on players too.
