If I were him, I wouldn’t like it either. Football was much more fair to the Crimson Tide when only they could buy players with impunity.
He's right, of course. And yet, no matter how much the rules change, he keeps on winning. On the field. In recruiting. In the portal. So impressive. Hard not to respect him. And doesn't shock me that none of our 8 defections in the last month went to Bama. I dont think they play the "outbid everyone no matter what" game. Our defections went to Miami, Georgia, Auburn, aTm, Texas. Those teams are the players that both have stupid money and don't mind spending it in stupid ways. Bama, like Florida, has stupid money. But, unlike Florida, they can still recruit at an elite level without spending it all on individual, unproven HS kids.
10 years ago I hated Saban with a fiery passion. In hindsight it was probably mostly out of jealousy. These days, it’s hard not to respect him. He’s been winning at the highest level for a long time.
They are an NFL factory. Whatever the may be deficient in NIL bids, if at all, they can make up for with NFL exposure.
Saban is a very smart man who has managed to stay near the top of NCAA football for a long time. There have to be some limits placed upon NIL, etc. for the benefit of NCAA sports. This is a train wreck waiting to happen. IMHO
The defections as you call them went to 5 other teams, wouldn't that mean that players are spreading around? It's not like every player in the portal is going to one team. Step back and look at from 10,000 feet. Players are going to a variety of teams. Yes, some for money, many for more playing time and a variety of other reasons. Caleb Douglas went to Texas Tech, most likely for playing time. NIL and the portal are creating more parity. We picked up players from Penn and JUCO, they moved up after proving themselves. Other players have made lateral moves looking to get on the field more like Dike from Wisconsin. This is happening around the entire CFB landscape but fans only focus on the moves of a few big names and say the system is broken. There is a much larger percentage of, lets call them depth players, making moves to get more playing time than there are players hunting big NIL money. 99% of these players will never see the NFL. They want to get playing time now and the portal has given them that opportunity. Take Max Brown, he went to Charlotte. Most likely looking for playing time. Yet fans would rather he sit on the bench for his career because Florida needs the depth. Screw him if he wants to actually play before his career ends. It baffles me that fans are pissed that players are doing what they feel is best for themselves and not doing the bidding of the fans whose only stake is being a fan of a particular team.
Saban nailed it with the key word, "guardrails." IMO, the crazy money and free agency ruined the NFL. I am not sure what the guardrails should be, but I fear the demise of CFB is currently happening! NIL seems to ensure me, me, me instead of a team mentality. One of the guardrails should be a cap where there are no bidding wars, and a player is not choosing a school based on $$.
I have never attacked a player for going somewhere else for playing time. That is their right. Do a better job of recruiting and you usually will not have that problem. We are early in the build up so things always look bleak for a while.
Guardrails are exactly what’s needed, and I think that should not only include a cap but a minimum as well. How can you build team chemistry and unity with a few guys making big dollars and others making none? There should also be strong deterrents and punishments for tampering. The more I think about it the more it sounds like minor league NFL and the less interested I am in watching, but Wild West no holds barred NIL and portal will kill the game sooner rather later.
None of your suggestions can happen unless the players unionize, a collective bargaining agreement is signed and the money comes directly from the university. And after that you still could not control NIL the way you want. Because it's money coming from a third party. Do NFL teams control the money players make outside their contracts? The answer is no Does a student on a music scholarship still have the ability to make money playing in a band and signing a record deal? The answer is yes.
Isn't this just life? In every job/sport/profession there is someone always making more than another. There is always individuals moving in and out.
Alabama DL Dee Liner Flashes Wads of Cash on Instagram Alabama Football Ignored Own Autograph Policy When it Came to T-Town Menswear They've been doing NIL before it was a thing. Might be the reason they've weathered the store. Call it sour grapes but I'm not going to pretend Saban just has some coaching ability beyond all others. It has always been a talent acquisition game. Coaching matters but players matter more. This stuff was from 10 years ago....
Saban is a hypocrite POS. He took advantage of the situation for all the money he could get, then bellyaches about others making their money. Again, what a greedy POS! If changes are gonna be made then it should start with coaches. My proposed changes: All coaches live on a compound on the universitey. Head coaches make $90K, coordinators make $50k and assistants make $30K. I like that a lot. Make it so.
I hate to say this and hope it doesn’t happen but part of me feels like a college football player’s union is inevitable.
The best should make the most, no doubt. But I don’t think any system/profession/team has long term viability when the production of the best depends on what would essentially be unpaid interns.
I thought this thread was about saban being the demise of college football, which might also be right
How do you regulate 3rd party involvement? In essence you have several big money "owners" of college football programs that don't have to spend their money on anything but buying players under the guise of NIL. Outside of project fundraising the boosters don't have to spend their money on operations other than personnel. No salary cap because supposedly the salaries still won't be coming from the university and even if they made players employees, the boosters will still be there throwing extra money on the side to circumvent a cap.
Saban can kiss my nether regions. That sanctimonious asswipe should be looking in the mirror every morning and realize that he and his corrupt sycophants are the primary reason that college football is in the state it finds itself in now. All that sumbitch is doing is trying to bleach his legacy. He disgusts me.
