Well it looks like that crime wave the right wingers warned you about never came. The most recent FBI numbers are out and they show falling crime rates off of what was already historically pretty low rates. Shockingly Fox refuses to report news and instead obfuscates the facts of the report with nonsense narratives. Crime is down, though Fox News viewers might not be aware Crime declined in the third quarter of 2023 relative to the same period in 2022, according to data released by the FBI last week. Violent crime was down 8 percent in jurisdictions that reported data — law enforcement agencies covering three-quarters of U.S. residents. Property crime was down 6 percent. Murder was down more than 15 percent. What’s particularly useful about the new FBI data is that the shifts are presented by the population each responding agency serves. So we can see that the drop isn’t a function just of a shift in smaller cities but, instead, occurred across the board. Property crime was up slightly — 0.1 percent — in the most populous cities. But violent crime was down in those places, as it was everywhere else. In fact, the biggest cities saw the biggest drops in murder. In response to the FBI report, Fox News offered a very useful distillation of how it makes lemonade out of the peck of lemons that is “crime isn’t actually rising.” “NBC News story tells Americans they’re ‘wrong’ to think crime is rising,” the Fox News headline reads, “blames ‘conditioning’ of press.” The piece is littered with similar scare quotes, with the apparent intent of reinforcing the belief that crime is rising solely by pointing out that the hated mainstream media says it isn’t. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/12/18/crime-fbi-fox-news/
On the flip side, property crimes actually rose 7.1% in 2022 after years of decline. A large jump in motor vehicle theft contributed to the rise in reported property crimes. The FBI said carjackings increased 8.1% from 2021, and the vast majority of carjackings involved an assailant with a weapon. Someone was injured in more than a quarter of all carjackings. The FBI is also increasingly tracking hate crimes, with more local law enforcement agencies reporting crimes that are motivated by bias. Last year, the FBI said it received more than 11,000 reports of hate crimes from around the country. Victims of these crimes were most frequently targeted for their race or ethnicity, followed by religion and then sexual orientation. Crime data for 2023 won’t be available from the FBI until late next year. A report released in July by nonpartisan think tank the Council on Criminal Justice used data from 37 surveyed cities. It found that vehicle thefts rose a whopping 33.5%.
lol. You guys thoroughly crack me up. Tell me again after looking at the graph below how concerned you are about property crime. USA - reported property crime rate 2022 | Statista
This isn't just an issue for Fox watchers. A recent poll showed 58% of Dems said crime was up too. All of the American media focuses just on bad news and it skews people's knowledge.
While those numbers are encouraging I don’t think you can come to sweeping conclusions by comparing two particular quarters.
Agreed I also think that Covid screwed up things so those years need an asterisk but the trends are apparent if you look at longer trends like city gator posted in post 3. I remember freakonomics thought two big factors were the removal of lead from gasoline and the availability of abortion.
Cell phones, home cameras, social media, and video show us crime every day. FBI reports no longer can be trusted. Their main focus is controlling the opposition. We know cities like NY, Chicago, San Fran, Portland, and Seattle are not in good shape. And we are now importing crime.
You guys forgot to post this in the DeSantistan thread. Things ain't so bad in DeSantistan. Florida crime rate drops for record 50-year low
Totally agree. If all we had access to was AP or Reuters for written news and something more professional than most of our broadcast news, how would the average citizen feel about things? Crime, economy, etc.? I'm not suggesting there are no problems in the world, but are there more or less than 30 years ago? I tend to think most US angst and anxiety is not organic and is contrived.
AP and Reuters have been a s***show forever. And FOX is pretty much in lockstep with cable and mainstream media. That international news is usually delivered with a British accent gives it a veneer of sophistication.
I'd say contrived. It's essentially, "Hey over there, look at this terrible instance (rare) that happened here! This must be happening everywhere! I want you to be disturbed so you'll read my posts or click on my stories, so I'll scour the internet for similar stories." Sadly everyone is bogged down in BS that really doesn't exist to the level that's reported, while we don't handle the big things that should matter.
Lead–crime hypothesis - Wikipedia The first meta-analysis of the lead-crime hypothesis was published in 2022.[10] "The Lead-Crime Hypothesis: A Meta-Analysis", authored by Anthony Higney, Nick Hanley, and Mirko Moro consolidates findings of 24 studies on the subject. It concluded that there is substantial evidence linking lead exposure to a heightened risk of criminal behavior, particularly violent crimes. This aligns with earlier research suggesting lead exposure may foster impulsive and aggressive tendencies, potential precursors to violent offenses. The study's implications point towards the potential benefits of reducing lead exposure to decrease crime rates. Such reductions could be achieved through initiatives like removing lead from products like gasoline and paint, water pipes and enhancing lead abatement measures in schools and residences.
Looks to me like the democrats need to get better at telling how good things are!!! Hell with Bidenomics, gas prices, crime, closed border they just need some supporting and sympathetic news sources to help tell us what is really going on in this country! Don't believe your eyes or your bank account. Trust me it is great!!!!
