So he and many other Americans have the opinion of slowing down immigration to our country. Are people not allowed to have that opinion? I happen to think its ok to slow it down now especially since we have had well over 10 million enter out country most of whom we can't track.

Are you talking about Fred and Donald Trump being sued by the DoJ in 1973? Didn't that end in both parties admitting no fault?
Obviously, that doesn't mean it didn't happen especially during that time period. Do you think that was more Fred or Donald? Donald Trump was 27 when the DoJ sued him and Fred. Im guessing Fred was calling all the shots, especially for incidents happening in the 60s.

Let's not pretend our country doesn't have past sins that are ugly and that only Trump's family was part of that.

Should we go beat on Biden's record when it comes to black people? It doesn't make any of it ok or right. It's our ugly past and it's something every single person alive today has had to progress on especially if you were alive back then.

My grandparents came to the US from Germany in the early 50s. They are from the former Youglasiva. The Nazis during the war forced them to live in Austria but they are not German in any way. When they got here, they lived in Chicago. Because of that time period, they too accepted segregation. I remember when I was a teenage boy I asked my grandpa about that time period and if he still believed or had the same thoughts (this was 25 years ago), he said it was not until he got here did he think that and that times have changed and didn't have the same views. Since I didn't grow up around that, it always baffled me people could view or treat other humans negatively because of their skin color. But the point is, times changed, we progressed and people have with it.
Many of you want to think only some people can change for the better and you base that mostly on if they have different political beliefs than you...

First, ya labor shortages from immigrants is what caused that, not forcing 10 of millions into lockdowns...

Funny actually I think Obama deported more than Trump if I remember correctly.

I don't think Trump like most people goes out of his way to help immigrants. I just don't think he thinks all immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country as the media is in my opinion twisting or taking out of context.

He definitely has very fragile self-esteem. It's one of the reasons I don't like him as president.

So you are saying everyone who goes to his rallies are white nationalist and only supports Trump because they think he is going to purify our country?

It's OK to believe we need to do better when it comes to undocumented immigration. But it's another to quote Hitler when it comes to describing the human beings entering our country. Calling people vermin and say they are poisoning our blood dehumanizes the immigrants, and leads to treating others less than human. When this starts, it usually doesn't just end with with one group being dehumanized. And dehumanization is what allows for the worst of atrocities like the Holocaust, which doesn't happen if people didn't see Jews and other undesirables as humans worthy of rights.

There is also the reality of this country. We've never had a secure border with Mexico since Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California were added to union. We are also a nation of immigrants, who come here seeking a better opportunity. And despite NINA (No Irish Need Apply) signs, those who come here do often find a better life, not only for themselves, but for their children and children's children.

Last, post pandemic, because of Trump's limiting of legal immigration, we were short about 3 million people who would have been in our work force had he not limited legal immigrants. The pandemic took the lives of hundred of thousands of people of working age, and caused many near retirement age to retire for health reasons. The 3 million people could have helped with a faster recovery, especially in areas like dock workers and transportation. But the people simply weren't here to help.

You can rationalize this all you want and try to blame it on Trump. He is the reason for the pandemic and all people who died, all the business that went out of business, all the homeless, all the mass murders, the increased crime. Am I forgetting anything? He is the anti-Christ!! It was his family behind the holocaust, little known fact about Hitler changing his name, he used to be known as Adolf Trumpler.

Surf, did you ever explain why you're convinced he was only talking about gang members and terrorists?

He is allowed the have that opinion, dumb as it is. But it is fundamentally anti-immigration. So he is anti-immigration, not just anti-illegal immigration.

Good try offloading the racism on Trump's father (the person who may have been in the KKK given your defense of him earlier). However, Donald Trump was President of the company at the time. And he kept doing it after the consent decree, requiring a further suit.

Who is pretending that? They just were very racist. BTW, it isn't like his racism stopped. Saying we need to send US citizens (of African or Middle Eastern or Hispanic descent) "back to their countries" is racism. Saying you don't want black people to handle your money is racism. Birtherism (where a guy with a birth certificate from Hawaii wasn't born here) was racism. His actions against the Central Park 5, even after their exoneration is racism. I could keep going if you would like.

I have not had to progress from refusing to rent to black people.

Again, where is the evidence of changing for the better? He has been making racist remarks for the past decade.

If you want to keep trying to defend the indefensible, go for it. Trump's use of the Fascist phrases like "poisoning the blood," and calling his domestic opponent "vermin," has no defense.

If you want to debate policy, there are plenty of scholarly articles on Trump's change in reducing the number of legal immigrants exacerbated the labor shortage created by the pandemic. And plenty of articles on how Trump's policy of basically tossing out the Pandemic Playbook made a bad situation even worse.

Sorry if you can't accept the fact that Trump is not only an awful person who Paul Ryan described as, "populist, authoritarian narcissist,” but Trump's policies left a ton to be desire as well.

Lockdowns wouldn't cause labor shortages once they are completed (and there was also a substantial shift in the demand curve for labor at the time). A cut in immigration would.

He had input. So did many others, dating back from the W. admin, and updated under Obama. The Playbook was a working document and several people added to it as more information and research became available. And Beth Cameron is basically credited with putting the doc together and updating it.

And Dr. Fauci? He holds several advanced degrees, and worked under several Presidents over decades, working on several infectious diseases from Aids all the way to COVID. Dismissing his expertise because he said things you didn't like is the epitome of idiocracy.

Yes, because more then once when talking about what is coming into our country does he specifically talk about the gangs and terrorist in the same speech.

This is more dehumanization of immigrants. Especially when the truth is, undocumented immigrants commit less felony crime than other groups. But convince people that all immigrants that are coming are poisoning the blood because they are gang members and/or terrorists, and it's easier to treat all immigrants with a broad brush, and treating them as criminals without rights.

I know he's talked about gangs at other times. But he upped the ante a good bit with the 'poisoning our blood ...' stuff. Can you point to anything in that speech where he makes it clear he's talking about gangs and terrorists? I believe you claimed the media twisted that speech and took a few comments out of context.
    Can you provide that context?

I apologize if this is redundant. Below is excerpt from Mein Kampf: Sound familiar?
Historical experience offers countless proofs of this. It shows with terrifying clarity that in every mingling of Aryan blood with that of lower peoples the result was the end of the cultured people. North America, whose population consists in by far the largest part of Germanic elements who mixed but little with the lower colored peoples, shows a different humanity and culture from Central and South America, where the predominantly Latin immigrants often mixed with the aborigines on a large scale. By this one example, we can clearly and distinctly recognize the effect of racial mixture. The Germanic inhabitant of the American continent, who has remained racially pure and unmixed, rose to be master of the continent; he will remain the master as long as he does not fall a victim to defilement of the blood.

All great cultures of the past perished only because the originally creative race died out from blood poisoning.

    Blood mixture and the resultant drop in the racial level is the sole cause of the dying out of old cultures;
for men do not perish as a result of lost wars, but by the loss of that force of resistance which is contained only in pure blood. All who are not of good race in this world are chaff....

Except we had many states go much longer than states like Florida. Long enough to cause a massive shortage on top of the new level of demand. We didn’t get back to pre pandemic workforce until March 2022.

We will never know if there was any real economic impact with worker shortage due to COVID. They started writing about it in 2017 yet even in 2019 the economy was still going strong.

We are in a worker shortage now. And given that most people don't work outside the house between states, it is highly unlikely that staggering state lockdown policies would have any impact on overall labor shortages. Maybe you see some shifting around of companies and labor, but the lack of internal migration controls means that this shouldn't cause shortages on the entire country like we have seen. A far more realistic explanation is that we were already seeing shortages (thus, the spike in illegal immigration in 2019) and then shut off legal immigration for about a year, to significantly worsen that shortage. And, due to our stupid controls on immigration, that shortage is persisting long after the pandemic because we can't bring in enough immigrants.
