So abortion rates went up for some other reason, and overall abortions rose by a small percentage. Yet, 1 in 4 women carried to term that would have otherwise aborted? Meaning, had Dobbs not passed, we would have seen a huge jump in overall abortion rates, even though historically, abortion rates have been falling YOY for the last four decades?

I care about fetuses. I have two kids of my own. I would prefer to live in a world where all pregnancies are wanted, and all end in healthy births. We don't live in that world. And I understand that women aren't walking wombs, and they should not be forced to carry to term against their will. Especially ones that are pregnant against their will, or those who may suffer medical complications. And if that means laws that allow all women to abort, so be it.

Abortion to save life of mother a red herring ?

It is only in extremely rare cases that abortion can even be mentioned as a potential means of saving the mother's life. Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, stated in a 1996 New York Times editorial that "partial-birth abortions are not needed to save the life of the mother."1 Sixteen years earlier, he wrote: "In my thirty-six years in pediatric surgery I have never known of one instance where the child had to be aborted to save the mother's life."2 Even Planned Parenthood's Dr. Alan Guttmacher acknowledged, “Today it is possible for almost any patient to be brought through pregnancy alive, unless she suffers from a fatal illness such as cancer or leukemia, and, if so, abortion would be unlikely to prolong, much less save, life.”3

Just sharing information from the New York Times.

Though now you seem to now be saying that abortion rates were going down for 4 decades, then Dobbs passed making it harder to get abortions so abortion rates went up? o_O

You're all over the place, dude.

I'm only following the data. Which shows abortion rates dropping 1980s until around 2020. Took a small step up, likely due to the pandemic. Just a guess, and no data behind it. Since Dobbs, a small number in increase in abortions, but rate has remained around flat. This is what the data is saying. If 150,000+ were not aborted, then why have the rates remained flat?

Maybe what NY Times is reporting in your story is just anecdotal, and doesn't represent what actually happened? And what actually happened is the number of abortions since Dobbs saw a slight uptick, with rates remaining flat? What else can account for the data we're seeing? 1/4 women who might have had an abortion carried to term after Dobbs, but 150,000 other women, who wouldn't have aborted before, are now having one? How does that pass the logic smell test?

Looks like the chart you shared starts to move up around 2017, not 2020.

It's possible someone is sharing bad or unreliable information.

It's also possible that there are just naturally more abortions now, while simultaneously, many women have been deterred from having abortions by limited accessibility since Dobbs.

Basically the number of abortions have gone up, but not as much as it would have if the Dobbs decision never happened.

Why that's the case, who the heck knows.

Jessica Valenti covers how Kelly Anne Conway and other Republican women are trying to promote access to contraception as a counter message to the losing political message on abortion. More specifically, they're trying to teach Republican men to conceal their obvious misogyny, at least rhetorically.

But the effort to promote contraception keeps running into problems, namely that so much of the Republican philosophical infrastructure has been dedicated over the years to a campaign of ending access and approval of contraception, because it's about control and limiting women's ability to define their own lives.
