Can someone tell me exactly what it is that Republicans are demanding about the border crisis than the Democrats are refusing to do? All I hear is that there can be no agreement. No talking heads explain about what. Just closing the border completely? What?
The Rs want to end all asylum claims, from what I understand. Here's a good article with more details. Biden is asking for more money for more agents and asylum judges. The Rs want to curtail asylum, build more wall, and not allow the POTUS to grant any sort of clemency for refugees. And this is a bridge too far for Ds, who want to maintain what this country was founded upon.
Well, then Biden should just be "dictator for a day" and give Ukraine all the money it wants. That way he can beat Trump to the punch at being America's first dictator for a day. The orange man will turn green with envy.
The devil is in the details but conceptually I don’t have a problem with what Republicans are proposing: In May, House Republicans had passed a sweeping bill, called H.R.2, to overhaul the immigration system, which included provisions to resume construction of the border wall, shrink the pool of migrants eligible for asylum, expand the qualifications required to achieve refugee status and curtail the administration’s powers to grant parole. It isn’t sustainable that anybody in the world, can just come here, step foot in the US, via legal or illegal means, claim Asylum and then we have to expeditiously process those claims (which currently we clearly can’t ) I am all for more judges and resources but the process has to be reformed. In the age of computers and mobile phones there is no reason why people can’t initially apply prior to setting foot in the US. The US is not in the position to accommodate everybody that wants to be here. We should have a robust and deliberate immigration process, not the free for all that we are witnessing now. For the record I don’t like holding up Ukraine aid for this and disagree with doing so. By the same token it is the only way to get leverage against Democrats to do something about it. The more cynical side of me says many of these MAGA republicans don’t want a deal and it’s an excuse to weasel out of supporting Ukraine.
Ukraine aid tied to a border bill? There's no way the GOP would support adding pork to a bill. That's one of the reasons that McCarthy lost his position
wearing my best tinfoil hat.. if someone were to facilitate the massive movement of immigrants from south/central america to the us border, it would paint Biden in the worst possible light regardless of what he does. who stands to benefit from facilitating the movement in large masses? who is paying for the transport network that is helpign to pump up the numbers?
Excellent analysis. I disagree with your conclusions (last 2 paragraphs), but tip my hat to you for a well grounded take and analysis. Fwiw.
It’s very simple actually. SLOW THE FLOW. Nothing else can be done until the flow is stopped or contained. And nothing else should be added to negotiations until the simple idea of slow the flow in achieved. Don’t make it more difficult than it is.
Nah. With our declining birth rate, we should be facilitating more immigration, not less. Bring in good, hard-working people who want a shot at the American dream.
When have we ever been successful at slowing the flow of undocumented immigrants? Only time is during the Bracero Program. Everything else has failed.
Biden should welcome this. It affords him the pretense for an off-ramp from his disastrous proxy war against Russia.
The main reason McCarthy lost his position was that great American statesman Matt Gaetz. Pride of the Sunshine State.
The White House and congress were working on a deal. However, Ron Johnson went on TV and said he was working on pausing or killing it. Not on its merits mind you, but because the GOP needs this as a perpetual campaign issue. They let the dog catch the car on abortion and that has not worked out well for them so far.
Why does this need its own thread? The negotiations for continued support of Ukraine are already covered in the main thread about the Russian invasion.
The Asylum system has been badly abused and you know it. "My country is a shithole country" is not a valid excuse for asylum. Asylum was meant for those face specific political oppression in their country. Let me ask you this AzCatFan. According to widely accepted asylum rules an individual seeking asylum is expected to do it in the first country they reach with a stable government. The individual seeking asylum is expected to do it in the first country where they do not risk political oppression/persecution. Why are these migrants passing a perfectly stable government in Mexico? Why are they not seeking asylum in Mexico? In every facet assimilating into Mexican culture would be far easier than U.S. culture. Why are they not seeking asylum in Mexico?
